Car description

1988 BMW M5. 143. 21 Original Miles. (that averages less than 5. 00 Miles Per Year). I've owned this car for nearly 4 years and have only put just over 5. 00 total miles on it. I really hadn't planned on selling. knowing it would be a good investment. but with this being one of my 5 cars. my wife says it's time for it to go. 1988 BMW M5's are currently listed in Auto Trader and Cars. com for between $34. 00 and $92. 00. As you probably know. this was a $48. 00 limited edition vehicle in 1988. In excellent condition and is an updated and quality driver that looks like a show car from 10' away. It took me 6 months to find this one and I feel like for the amount of money I wanted to spend. that this has been an excellent and fun Classic. Runs terrific with a very strong and great sounding motor. Very hard to find a 1988 M5 in this condition without spending $25. 00 plus. **** *Garage kept and covered/winter stored. *Extensive and documented service history within a 3" 3 Ring binder *Great condition inside and out. *Upgraded BMW Factory wheels. *Newer B & B Triflow stainless steel exhaust. *European headlight and front grill conversion. *Updated rear suspension with Bilstien sport shocks. *Upgraded Alpine stereo. *Newer Leather Front Seats and under dash. *Newer Bosch battery. *Newer / Excellent Sumitomo Tires. *Momo Steering wheel as well as the original BMW steering wheel Here is the chance to own one of the finest examples of BMW's E28 M5 and one of the fastest appreciating Classic European automobiles. This is the original hand built performance sedan that started it all. With the total production of 2. 91 units. the E28 M5 remains among the rarest regular production BMW Motorsport cars. Only 1. 35 of these were shipped to North America. These production numbers are in line with other limited production vehicles such as the Porsche Carrera RS. This car is destined to be sought after by collectors. This M5 has been well cared for as evidenced by the paint and the overall condition of the interior. If you know your older classic BMW's. you realize how delicate the dashes are. Overall it's in very good condition with just a few cracks that are Only Visible when looking up over the dash near where it meets the window. I have an older CarFax that was done in 2001 that the previous owner included with the sale that lists 4 previous owners. It has the history up to 93. 74 miles. The Autocheck report mentions 4 previous owners. I am guessing I am the 5th owner based on the Ebay listing when I bought it. Other previous owners have lived in Michigan. Georgia and Hawaii. I have various receipts from all 3 States. As I mentioned in the ad. I consider the overall condition to be way above average to excellent. I’m fairly particular myself and I had looked for 6 months for an M5 that was somewhat within my budget. not wanting to spend in the mid $20K’s or more for a car that would be only marginally better. General questions: I thought I would present one information sheet to answer most of the questions I’ve received. I feel I’ve priced this car very well to sell quickly. If I was interested in taking months to sell. it. I probably could have listed it in the low $20’s as there are so few of these available. Personally. after 6 months of shopping specifically for a 1988 M5. I settled on this one. I had the car inspected in Georgia by a friend of mine who knows cars well. He raved about the condition. The previous owner seemed quite affluent with a ¼ mile driveway and a half a dozen other BMW’s in his collection. I know there are finer examples available but I know that they come at a substantial premium. I just didn’t want to have $25-$30K tied up in a car that I drive 1. 00 miles a year. This is a rapidly appreciating vehicle and could easily be put in in that higher tier without too much work. Q: Does the car have any rust at all? How is the paint? Any dents or dings: A: No dents or door dings. A little scraping at the bottom of the front spoiler from driveways or parking lots. Very little rust anywhere that I have found. The body panels all seem to be without rust and in exceptional condition. There is a very small amount of rust in the trunk area around the rubber seal. Apparently this is common for these. The rubber trunk seals would look better if they were replaced. The original moldings that surround the front and rear windshields are better but also original. None of this is very significant with the exception of where I dropped my wheel and tire along the inside trunk edge. I broke a 1” long piece section of the ¼” wide trunk edge inside the trunk. Hard to explain. I have a piece of black tape shown where I just loosely covered it up. The picture is shown on the photobucket link at the bottom of this overview. I know I could have a new piece welded in. honestly just didn’t think it was that big of a deal to go through that time and expense. Q: Does the car need anything mechanical or electrically repaired? A: Although the brakes were done at 133. 00 miles. the pedal seems pretty “low” to me. although the brakes seem to work fine. The motor and the way the car runs. handles and sounds is a main appeal for sure. I’m 58 years old. and have to admit. I love the “throaty” exhaust sound of the B & B Triflow stainless exhaust. The previous owner had told me that the stainless exhaust was a $3. 00 expense in total. The tires are excellent with 2 being near new. Handling is very tight. The battery is 8 months old and stays on a trickle charge all of the time. The sunroof works easily opening. closing and venting. It just doesn’t tuck up completely flush to the roof. It comes completely closed. tucked up a little high in the back. I typically just don’t completely let it wind to the very end and it's fine and flush when closed. Q: Any paint work done? A: None since I’ve owned the vehicle. The previous owner had listed it as recent paint and with all original panels. no reported accidents. The car still shines beautifully and the overall condition of the paint seems to be very good. Oddly. there is a smaller than dime size flaw in the center of the roof that looks like a drop of paint that was allowed to dry without being sanded down or rubbed out. I asked the previous owner why he never fixed that and he just said it didn’t bug him that much. I showed it to a nearby body shop and the owner questioned why I would want to spend a few hundred dollars to fix just that so I didn’t either. Q: Any accidents or damage history that you know of? A: No and none reported on the older Carfax or the Autocheck vehicle history report when I bought it. Q: Dash cracking / How bad? A: (see photo). Again. you have to lift up out of your seat and look over the instrument cowel to see them. Wish it wasn’t but I’ve seen much worse and honestly I usually see much worse. At least you can’t see it from where you sit which is nice. It doesn’t seem to be getting any worse. New dashes for these are silly expensive. Q: Does the Car has a clean title / What is the VIN? A: Yes / WBSDC9301J2791985 Overall Interior condition is very nice. As mentioned in the ad. the car had new front leather seats and glove box done by a professional upholsterer in very soft leather. The back seat is original and is in excellent condition for a 27 year old vehicle. All four door panels are very good. Nice enough to possibly have been replacements at some point. They look very good for 27 years old.
