Car description

This 1991 BMW 535i has only 157k original miles and is powered by a 3.4-liter inline-six with a rare 5-speed manual transmission and limited slip differential (factory option S209 25%), wearing 17” staggered AC Schnitzer Type III wheels (believed to be replicas). Previously owned in California and Oregon, the car was brought to Minnesota after being acquired in March 2017.

This is a really beautiful example of an unmolested E34 with exactly the right amount of modification.

Finished in Sterling Silver Metallic, the paintwork is bright and the car shows a few chips and dings commensurate with the age and mileage of the car. The paint is believed original, though the rear bumper has been repainted and displays some deterioration in its finish. New roundels were installed on the hood and trunk in/around 2017. The window tint is not film but rather the glass itself and is believed to be an original factory ordered Individual Special equipment item.

Previous owners installed a Dinan Performance Chip, an adjustable coil-over suspension package to slightly lower the car and give it a more aggressive stance, the Euro clear corner lights (front and rear).

The blue interior shows some sun fading and there are slight surface cracks on some of the wood accents, though the dash remains un-cracked. The leather upholstery is clean and intact, but appears dry in areas, with abrasion and creasing most prominent on the driver’s seat. The digital readouts are fully illuminated, with none of the common dropped pixels. However, the outside temperature does not register correctly on the trip computer. All other electronics and switches are functional, and the A/C blows cold. A Pioneer stereo with hands-free capability replaces the stock unit, which is included with the sale.

The 3.4-liter M30 inline-six produced 208 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque when new. Stamps for scheduled maintenance are present in the owner’s manual. The car is corrosion-free and displays no mechanical problems.

The car has been driven ~7K miles in the past 3 years. In the past year I have had the following updates and work performed professionally as we discovered “radiator stop-leak” in the cooling system. This is the worst things to find as it is known to plug up everything in the cooling system, it can effectively block portions of the radiator and could become an issue later or could have created issues with the water pump bearings and thermostat...So, I had Further Performance in Minneapolis pull vacuum on the entire cooling system, held for 10 minutes at 25 in/hg, filled entire system with water to test ability to cool and circulate sufficiently. We then went ahead and had Further replace the radiator, water pump, thermostat, and hoses (upper and lower radiator, water pump to thermostat). They also replaced 3 drive belts as they were very dry and near cracking,

In addition I have replaced the starter and the clutch slave cylinder.

Known issues:

  • Suspension is soft…..not taut like a Koni or Bilstein plus H&R sport spring set-up

  • The passenger door does not lock

  • The glove box hinge / mount becomes disconnected not allowing normal operation

  • Rear bumper paint is heavily “sun faded”

  • Various dings/scrapes on body, notably lower right rear passenger door, left rear corner below tail-light, front hood leading edge chips.

  • The original factory basketweave alloys are also included with the sale and show no curb rash.

An Autocheck from 2017, prior to my purchase, corroborates the mileage and describes no instances of damage or loss. A duplicate title is mentioned, as well as a recent impound sale (which was described as a state system flag item as multiple sales occurred between dealers in Idaho and Oregon).
