1972 BMW 2002tii — Classic Roundie with Factory Sunroof. Young Engine! Runs Beautifully. Looks beautiful and runs great. Mechanically well-maintained. Low-miles on engine (see below for details) . Showing normal cosmetic wear and tear for a 44-year-old car. Needs some minor bodywork (see description and photos). A perfect restoration candidate. Minimal effort and investment can bring this good-looking and mechanically-sound car back to its gorgeous best! I acquired this vehicle from the original owner back in 1994 – an elderly neighbor of mine in Palo Alto who was no longer able to drive this vehicle that he took much pride in. I’m not a “car wonk” who knows the classic car jargon. I’m just an ordinary person who loves this stylish little car and who can vouch that it runs really well. always starts up easy. and is very fun to drive. It has a history of very few repairs besides regular maintenance. e. g. head gasket replaced around 1994. and since then a new alternator. new gas tank. muffler. brake rotors. shocks. that's about it! Unfortunately. my finances and life-obligations don't permit me to give this collector's piece the time or investment that it deserves to keep it looking at it’s best. so I’m wanting to sell it to someone who can appreciate how special it is. restore it back to its full classic potential. and enjoy sporting it around. FOR SERIOUS INQUIRIES FROM QUALIFIED BIDDERS ONLY Please read all the information below first before you bid or inquire. I've tried to be complete and detailed about the condition of this car. If you find you have additional questions. please email me. FEATURES - SOME CHARACTERISTICS THAT MAKE THIS CAR SPECIAL * 2002 tii model – the souped-up fuel-injected version of the 2002. sought-after by collectors and getting harder to come by * “Roundie” – has the beautiful. classic round tail-lights * Young robust engine! -- New factory-made engine installed in early 80's. Driven very infrequently since then (see "History" section below for more details). Odometer stuck at 17. 82; I estimate there are about 40. 00 miles on this engine. * Nearly unmodified – a rare find in as original condition as this! * Rare. early factory-original sunroof * "Long bumpers" model – mark of the late-'72 model preferred by collectors * Purchased in Europe – original German plate underneath front California plate (original owner bought it in Germany and shipped to the U. S. )* California blue-plates - car has spent it's life in the sunny SF Bay Area * Beautiful and eye-catching. People leave notes of admiration under the windshield wiper and I get lots of smiles and thumbs up on the road! OTHER NOTABLE FEATURES: * Current owner is second owner * 4-speed manual transmission* Tires in decent shape (guessing 50%) * New gas tank installed in the late 90s (seems a long time ago. but the car's hardly been driven since then) * New brake pads * Steering linkage good and tight* No leaking of oil or transmission fluids * Virtually rust free - only hint I've seen are the few tiny bumps in the area between the front-bottom of the doors and the front tires (visible in the photos); these haven't changed in 30 years * Have original radio grill (retained from when original radio was removed to install the current one in the dash) * Haynes automotive repair manual for BMW 2002 included* Also included: a fresh piece of chrome door trim to replace the dented trim on the driver's side; I also have the right front reflector (missing from one of the photos) -- it was removed to repair a small dent and hasn't been reattached. * Runs great. Light. fun. agile. small. Great visibility and handling! Mechanic at “Double 02 Salvage” in San Leandro (a shop dedicated to parts and service for this car). nbsp; said this was the best-driving 2002tii he had ever driven! * VIN: 2761816 CONDITION - MAIN DEFECTS I’M AWARE OF: * Normal light wear and tear throughout * Minor body work needed. including: (1) light-damage to the left rear quarter panel (see photos; a high-end body shop estimated $1. 00 to repair the panel); (2) a ding on the nose at top of front grill (see photo); (3) amateurly-refinished trunk lid (not visible except on very close inspection); and (4) slight pressure-denting on upper rear panel. to left of trunk keyhole (subtle; doesn't come well out in photos). These are the things the body shop spotted. All minor. * Paint is 20 years old. with small nicks. weathering. oxidation and applications of touch-up paint visible on close inspection (especially on top surfaces of vehicle) -- the new owner I imagine will want to repaint the car to give it new life * Original owner had the car repainted red (over original light blue) in or around 1993. with a run-of-the-mill paint job (has held up pretty well. though); as can be seen in the photos. original blue paint is visible in some places (in trunk. under trim. and under hood)* Top of dashboard under front window has crack in the vinyl (visible in photo of top of dash. above instrument panel) * Key-lock cylinder on driver door needs to be replaced (driver-side door locks but currently must be opened from inside) * Odometer not functioning* Turn signal works inconsistently * Worn weather stripping. esp. driver's side* Passenger-side seatbelt needs adjustment (requires coaxing to extend) * Sunroof seal needs replacement* Clock not working * Aftermarket sound system installed is mediocre; one speaker non-functioning; speaker holes in left and right door panels HISTORY: The car is in solid operating condition. It’s been mechanically well-maintained. with regular. frequent oil-changes. etc. As stated above. the original owner installed a new factory-made engine in the early 1980s. a story confirmed when I acquired the car in 1994 and had to replace the head gasket: at this time. the mechanic showed me that inside the engine cylinders you could still see the “polishing swirls” that. he said. are a sign of a new engine. (With odometer stuck at 17. 82. actual mileage is unknown; I guesstimate 40. 00 miles on this engine. ) The car has been driven very little since the new engine was installed. Since I took ownership. I've driven it on average perhaps 50-75 miles per month. almost exclusively freeway miles. This was a second vehicle for both the original owner and myself. PRICING: I’m setting a low reserve for this exceptional. classic car. which is going up in value in recent years.
