A few months ago we sold an excellent Brilliantrot 318is; we loved that car and immediately upon selling it began looking for another. Before long we stumbled upon this lovely Alpine White example. This particular 318is was originally delivered to Arizona, where it remained until 2005. The car then resided in Texas from 2005 to 2013, and Florida until we purchased it in early 2017. The car is in excellent condition, having covered just under 83,000 miles over the course of its 26 year life. Looked at as the spiritual successor to the 2002 within the BMW-enthusiast community, the 318is offers a peppy, rev-happy, lively, and visceral driving experience. This car drives much like it looks - very, very well. Exterior: Alpine White paint is original with the exception of the driver rear quarter, as confirmed with an elcometer. Rear quarter was sprayed at our partner shop, Albany Auto Chicago, following the correction of a minor blemish. Paint is in phenomenal shape throughout. It has a great shine to it and there is no fading, signs of clear coat aging, or scratches whatsoever. There are a few rock chips up front that have been touched up but are visible upon close inspection. All trim pieces, grille, badges, and lights are in excellent condition. Rubber molding around the front windows does show its age, however. All glass is VIN stamped and matches, and is clear and crack-free. The body itself in in excellent shape as well, with no dents or dings. There appears to be evidence of a previous PDR repair on the lower front passenger wheel well, please see close-up photo. It's by no means glaring, but it is noticeable under the right lighting. Overall, this car is a very clean, straight, and well-preserved car that is only some minor TLC away from being top-level #1 condition. It gets thumbs-ups from oncoming traffic every time we drive it. Interior: We really like the interior of these cars, particularly with the sport seats. These cars are ergonomically perfect. The driving position provides good visibility, and the placement of the gear lever feels just right. Brake pedal and accelerator are perfectly staggered and close, making for some great downshifting. With the exception of a few cracks at the front of the dash, the interior is mint. Natur 0192 front sport seats are comfortable, supportive, and in as-new condition. Absolutely no tears or scuffs. Backseat is much of the same. Black plastic around center console/handbrake/shifter area presents in as-new condition as well. Headliner is tight and in as-new condition. Manual sliding sunroof opens and closes without a fuss. Original steering wheel is in excellent shape. Gauges are all functional. The original BMW radio remains in place and sounds great. Wipers, wiper sprayers, lights, and fan are all functional. Air conditioning is ice cold and heat is hot. Powered windows, locks, and antenna are all functional as well. Digital interior clock is functional, though the time display screen is a bit wonky. Doors open and close without any hesitation. Under the Hood / Underbody: This car is powered by its original M42 inline-4 with just under 83k miles. The car only weighs 2600lbs, so the rev-happy 140hp 1.8L 4-cylinder provides more-than-sufficient power. While it likely wont win any drag races, that isn't what this car is about. In the corners it comes alive. Handling is fantastic; movement of the rear end is predictable and manageable, while excellent brakes (pads are new) and the smooth-shifting 5spd manual make the driver feel like a hero. This car wears new Falken rubber at all four corners. As the car has been in minimal-salt states since new, the underbody is in excellent condition. There is absolutely no rust to note, not even surface rust. Please take a good look through the pictures. Car will be sold with three sets of keys, original manuals, spare, jack, tools, and receipts for a number of cosmetic items. Mechanical receipts include valve cover seals and gaskets, air and fuel filters, spark plugs, brake pads and sensors, emergency brake shoes, and tires. Overall, this is a clean, well-sorted example of the great driver's car that is the 318is. While it's definitely easy on the eyes, it truly needs to be driven to be understood and appreciated.
