Car description |
---|
This 1968 Austin America has41k miles and was recoveredfrom long term storagein Eugene, Oregon three years ago. The car was parked in the mid-1980s following a failure of the hydrolastic suspension, which has since been repaired. This car was sold new in Portland, Oregon and retains most of its original paint. In order to get the car back on the road, it was tuned up by the A-Series specialists at JET Motors, who also replaced the brake pads, rear wheel cylinders, and exchanged the soft brake lines for braided stainless items. The caris sold with records documenting the refurbishmentand a clean Oregon title.
This Austin sits level on its original Hydrolastic suspension pumped up to 225psi. Designers Alec Issigonis and Alex Moulton were inspired by the Citroen 2CV and DS, and endeavored to create a suspension system that gave a similar ride quality to those two cars without the undesirable roll characteristics of the 2CV.
There has been some touchup work to correct some minor paint flaws - the rear finish panel has been painted. Finish is well preserved overall, and the inner wheel wells remain a good match for the rest of the exterior. Some minor dents are present, but they are not easy to spot in photographs. There is some discoloration on the hood in some spots as well as the roof. There are a good amount of stone chips on the lower valance. There are some minor flaws near the main body trim.
The interior is unmodified, and retains its original radio and 2-spoke steering wheel. The instruments and interior lighting functioncorrectly apart from the temperature gauge, which works intermittently. Original details are present throughout, such as the BMC tags on the seatbelt clasps and the matching BMC key fob. The trunk appears nicely detailedand retainsthe original spare fitted under the floor.
The 1275cc inline-four is paired toan unusual automatic transmission thatshared oil with the engine and used bevel rather than planetary gears. The car shifts smoothly with the manual selector, though the oil light comes on when the car is used in fully automatic mode and the gears will slip. So can be driven in manual mode, but not automatic mode. The recent recommissioning included a tune-up and carburetor cleaning performed by JET Motors and British Motor Care.
These cars featured fairly sophisticated suspension for the day with linked hydrolastic suspension front and rear. The lines for the rear suspension were replaced and the system has been pumped up to the correct pressure. Additionally, the car received all-new braided stainless steel brake hoses, brake pads, rear wheel cylinders, and the brake master cylinder was rebuilt.
The underside appears straight with some light surface oxidation evident, but no signs of rot. Please note inthe engine bay there is black seam sealer which appears like rust, but is just sealer. It is photoed to be more clear.
There are spare parts included and shown in the trunk. Tires are white wall add-ons which can be removed.
My standard disclaimer/mantra for any car regardless of service or price: The car is sold with no warranty. You are buying a used car. Eventually every car will break, if you find one that doesn't please let me know. I do my ABSOLUTE BEST to describe accurately the shape of the car, but keep in mind it is impossible to discuss every detail of a car for better or worst. That said if ever you encounter an issue I do my best to provide advice, direction or even parts if I have them. Please understand that it is a used car and will have minor signs of use despite its service and restoration. That means please do not expect a showroom brand new car. Please adjust your expectation level to that of a 50+ year old car that has has some cosmetic and mechanical needs. Please only bid if you intend to buy. If you would like to have an Ebay 3rd party mechanic service check out the car I MORE than welcome it. Please have the car checked out before bidding and not after, if you intend to use that service. And please, if you would like to utilize this service, contact me with more than a couple days left in the auction so we can arrange schedules. Please check your local laws and registration procedures before buying. Buying over the internet can be scary sometimes! I get it, because I am an enthusiast too!! For that very reason, I am more than happy to answer every and any question you may so you know 100% what you are buying. But, please ask any and all questions ahead of purchase! It is impossible to list every pro and con of a car, I am not an inspection service, it is your responsibility as a buyer to do your due diligence and inspect the car. All sales are final, you are buying as-is, the sky is blue, etc, etc. Sorry to have to give the boring speech! Please feel free to ask any and all questions!!
