Car description |
---|
1931 Auburn 8-98A Convertible. A beautiful red Auburn with Black leather interior powered by the Lycoming straight eight engine with 70,639 miles.
Owned by the same family for many generations the car was restored to a high standard some time in the late ‘90s and then stored in a humidity controlled garage. The restoration work has held up extremely well over the years, the chassis and body has no rust. The paint, while aging, shines brightly with only a few blemishes. The exterior glass and lights are all very good, the beautiful front headlights look almost new. The running boards are functional but need refurbishing with new grips. The interior is in very nice condition, the leather seats look new, the door panels are also very good, a new floor mat has been added recently. The wonderful original dashboard is in very nice condition and all the electrical gauges work correctly, the King Seeley oil and fuel level gauges do not appear to function although the high specificity oils to refill these gauges do come with the car. An attractive rumble seat provides additional space for two extra passengers or additional storage as needed. Further storage is available with the rear wooden storage rack which is in very nice condition. The convertible roof is in nice condition but has not been tested for operation.
The car starts first time and runs up through the gears nicely, the brakes have been serviced and the brake shoes look new. All the electrics have been serviced and work correctly, supplemental brake lighting, turn signal indicators and front lap belts have been added for safety.
The following work has recently been completed
-New top quality 2018 Bedford 700-17 white wall tires all round
-New 6V Optima Battery (car is original 6V positive earth)
-Water pump has been serviced with new ceramic double seals
-New Electric Fuel Pump (original mechanical pump comes with car)
-New fuel lines, pressure regulator & pressure gauge
-New accessory belts
-New Windshield Wiper motor, arm & wiper
-New Safety Lap Belts
-New Autolite plugs and leads
-Ammeter gauge serviced & repaired
-Discrete 12V & 5V/USB supplemental supply added (easily removed)
-Battery disconnects (easily removed)
In addition, included are some spares with the car.An additional set of tires (for show only), Coil, Condenser, 6V Fuel Pump, original Mechanical Fuel pump, spare 6V battery and more. Original key, operating manuals and documentation.
Car has just been serviced with fresh oil, oil filter, plugs and leads. As noted previously, the car starts first time and runs nicely but could do with some carburetor tuning or possibly adjustments for best performance as the car has not been used much at in the last 20 years. Regardless, after servicing, the 98HP Lycoming engine pulls the car up crisply to highway speeds with plenty of torque on tap to keep up with modern traffic.
The 1930’s 898A specification car from Auburn was the top of the line and included the free wheeling unit and supplemental fender wheels both sides, braces and mirrors really setting off the looks of the car.
The car is a head turner and gets tremendous interest and attention wherever it goes. This would be a great choice for a collector or those with a passion for Auburn, Cord or Duesenburg looking to take one of these historic vehicles to the next level. A recent PPI has been performed and is available to prospective buyers for inspection.
In summary, a rarely available original Auburn with an older restoration that has held up very nicely now looking for it’s next custodian.
Any additional inspection is welcome. The car is available for viewing in Springfield, Missouri by arrangement.
