Offered for sale with NO RESERVE is my 1971 AMC Hornet SC/360 project car from California. I have been working on this one for a few years but priorities have changed. I have not run or driven the car so I don't have any glamorous photos of it.
The SC/360 was American Motors' third and final limited production, special edition muscle car, following the Hurst SC/Rambler and Rebel Machine. By the early 1970s insurance companies were taking a hard look at muscle cars and adjusting their rates accordingly. The SC/360 was built to fly under the radar so to speak, with a smaller engine in a lightweight body, and subtle stripes instead of flashy red, white & blue graphics. It also wasn't promoted as extensively as the SC/Rambler and Machine, and for this reason only 784 SC/360's were built. Of that production run it is estimated that approximately 125 survive today, making it one of the rarest muscle cars.
This is an original SC/360 built with an automatic transmission and GO Package, which included a 4 bbl carburetor, hood scoop, and functional ram air induction. It is painted the popular Mustard Yellow color and still wears about 75% of its original paint. There has only been some touch-up and all body panels are the originals as far as I can tell. The complete underbody including rockers and floor pans are rock solid. There was minor rust at the bottom of the rear quarters caused by water leaking into the trunk, but this has been repaired by welding in sections of NOS quarter panels, not just patches and filler. There is a very small amount of rust at the lower corners of the doors, and at the bottom of the spare tire well in the trunk, but the rest of the body is rust-free. Being nearly 50 years old there is an honest patina including a number of minor dents, creases and thin spots in the paint and stripes. The car is still presentable and I had intended to drive it this way for a few years before doing a complete restoration. The bumpers, grille, headlight bezels, tail lights, rear overlay, and gas cap are all very nice. The rear luggage rack is also nice but a brand new one is also included.
Inside the carpet is brand new. The steering column and dash have been refinished, including plastic chrome plating the dash overlays before they were painted. The headliner is nice as are the original reclining front seats. The top part of the back seat will need to be recovered as somehow the original one got away. A roll of NOS vinyl is included for this purpose. The door panel boards have been changed using the original vinyl but these have not been installed yet.
The engine compartment and underside of the hood have been repainted and look great. Lots of mechanical work has also been completed, including a rebuilt front suspension, new master cylinder, front calipers and rear brakes, new brake lines and hoses, new front to rear fuel line, gas tank flushed, new front shocks, and a brand new engine compartment wiring harness. The engine, transmission, and radiator currently in the car are from my AMX and will be carefully removed as soon as a sale is finalized. But included with the sale is the damaged factory original engine as well as a disassembled and inspected early model 360, rebuildable transmission and radiator. I have converted the car to manual steering but will include the original power steering box with the car. The exhaust is new but only the tail pipes have been installed. The new mufflers are still in the boxes. The tires have almost no miles but are old and should be replaced. The Magnum 500 wheels need to be refinished and do not include caps or rings as I was planning to run some vintage mags instead. Most every part to complete the car is included as well as some extra parts. If you happen to have a 360 and automatic ready to go in you could be driving this in a weekend.
Odometer shows 29000 miles but actual mileage is unknown. Clear title, very nice door tag and original VIN sticker on the driver's door. Car is sold as a rolling project only, and AS IS. Delivery or transport is the responsibility of the buyer. No warranty of any type is expressed or implied. Car is advertised elsewhere so I do reserve the right to cancel this listing at any time without notice. I also reserve the right to cancel bids for any reason. No reserve, bid to own this RARE muscle car!
