Car description

AMC certainly occupies a unique place in automotive history. Starting out in 1954 as the result of what was, at the time, the biggest corporate merger in US history, they would go on to do battle with the firmly entrenched Big Three, and turn out some truly iconic cars in the process. This 1974 AMC Javelin boasts a fittingly unique heritage of its own in its day, holding firmly to its muscle car V8 roots while competitors elsewhere were shifting to less powerful, though more fuel efficient powerplants.
AMC was all about bucking tradition and coming up with automotive designs that really stood out and, while this Javelin shows evidence of that tendency, it's also an appealing, sturdy-looking muscle car that wears its distinctive appearance proudly. With its long hood, almost geometrically-shaped windows and beefy back end, it won't be confused with any of its counterparts, but standing out in a crowd is what we're after with muscle cars. Decked out in a bronze hue that's both period-appropriate and a great complement to its shape, with a black stripe encircling its front end, this is a ride sure to draw admiring glances as it cruises down the boulevard. It's got an aggressive, inclined stance that's amplified by the larger 16" wheels in back. More than 40 years after it rolled off the assembly line, it still looks straight and well-fitted, as evidenced by the evenness of the distinct steel ridge running most of the length of its exterior as it transitions from fender to door to quarter panel.
Inside, you'll see an interior that's truly in impressive shape and features a variety of the distinctive styling cues that helped AMC to curry favor as a corporate rebel back in its heyday. The high backed black vinyl and cloth bucket seats appear to have seen very little use and the center console in the middle not only provides some additional storage space but, in contrast to many of the models of that era, is actually high enough to rest an elbow on while driving. Just beyond the Grant GT steering wheel, you can see more evidence of that AMC individuality. The burl patterned dash has a semi-circle shape to it, almost encircling the driver but still offering plenty of navigating space. The gate-shaped shifter sitting on top of the console is within very easy reach and provides still another unique styling cue in a car that certainly has no shortage of them.
Under that long hood a big block 401 cubic inch V8 topped with a Holley 4-barrel carb sits in place of the smaller original. The largest, most powerful engine option at the time this car was released, it boasts nearly 100 cubic inches of displacement over its predecessor, as well as power that was sufficient to prompt the Alabama Highway Patrol to choose Javelins equipped with this powerplant for their own fleet. Bolted to a 3-speed automatic transmission, it breathes through its dual exhausts with a low, throaty rumble. When the Javelin performed its duty in Alabama, it got strong reviews for its precise power steering, with more than one officer commenting that the feature provided a good measure of confidence during pursuits. This unique and rare mid-70's era muscle car sits on a set of stock steel rims 14s in front and 16s in back, wrapped in Winston Winner G/T radials.
