1979 HILUX REGULAR CAB LONG BED with 2UZ-FE V8This 1st generation Hilux named Grabber is the cleanest, tightest, fastest, most reliable and rust free 1979 "All Toyota" Hilux on the planet. Originally built in Japan 40 years ago. She's the Cleanest because, well, just look at her. The Tightest because virtually every servicable part, bushing and bearing is new with no rattles, no leaks nor mechanical issues. Fastest because where else have you seen such a classic old lightweight truck with a modern Tundra drive train? Most Reliable because this same drivetrain went over a million miles in 2 different similar Tundras within the last couple years as documented here:https://www.motor1.com/news/347462/second-toyota-tundra-1-million-miles/.Rust Free because Tucson, Arizona is so dry it's where the US Air Force retires all their old aircraft in a huge 10,000 acre desert bone yard so they can press them back into service if the need arises.https://www.abc15.com/news/state/the-boneyard-secret-airplane-graveyard-in-tucson-arizona
MECHANICALS:This classic Toyota runs and drives BETTER than it looks with absolutely zero mechanical issues. Professionally engineered drivetrain swap utilized a rolled over 2001 Tundra V8 2WD with automatic transmission and 109,000 miles then professional Toyota technicians painstakingly transplanted, with all of the factory emissions, EVAP and OBDII sensors with every attention to detail, including the incorporation of the Tundra gauge cluster (digital odometer shows original 109,000 miles) into the factory dash which means not only does it have all the Tundra factory gauges, with tach, temp, oil pressure, voltage and fuel level but also turn signal, wiper switches and daytime running lights with the proper working OBD2 plug port under the dash to insert a modern code reader scanner. Power steering, power disc brakes, ice cold AC, factory seat belts, and a nice sounding Sony CD deck crowns the creature comforts.Jump in this truck and drive it coast to coast feeling confident it needs nothing but gasolinebut you better have a good radar/laser detector since the 70 mph to 100 mph roll on capability is a madman. If you've ever wanted a really nice vintage Hilux the time to buy is when you see it because when you blink they're gone.
2UZ-FE (4.7L) V8:Legendarily reliable Tundra V8 runs like an industrial sewing machine. Starts every time with a click of key. No smoke, no knocks, no leaks, no issues whatsoever. Justtorquey smooth quiet power. Very quick.Excellent throttle response. Wants to bark the tires off every stop. Runs super cool even on Tucson summer days thanks to the upgraded oversized hand-built aluminum radiator. Of course the timing belt, water pump, tensioners and seals were all just replaced with an Aisin OEM kit (see picture). A new Denso Fuel pump with new strainer was just installed along with all the new Denso ignition parts plus all the spec fluids and filters. There's an oversized aluminum oil cooler mounted under the front bumper. The custom 2 into 1 exhaust has the twin factory catalytic converters and O2 sensors so it's potentially emissions legal in every state. With remarkable engineering the top half of the Tundra fuel tank was professionally grafted onto the bottom half of the Hilux tank so that all the parts in the tank are now Tundra. The intake and exhaust along with many other unique features were designed by master mechanic Leslie Hamilton who deserves a big hat tip. After designing and installing the custom motor mounts he even incorporated a stainless steel line between the block and lower suspension cross member to prevent torque roll of the engine in such a light weight truck. Here's a start up video. Notice the fully functioning 2001 Tundra gauge cluster is installed in the 1979 dash:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SK1Zet4PTQA&feature=youtu.be.Here's a 70 mph to 100 mph roll on video but I apologize in advance for the picture quality:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCzh_bGWx4M
A340 4 SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:This Factory Tundra Aisin automatic transmission was born with this Tundra engine. When it was swapped in with the engine it was separated so that all the seals, fluids and filter were replaced, including the rear main seal. A custom drive shaft was made and balanced by Mike the Pro at Truck & Trailer Parts in Tucson and a new center carrier bearing was installed. The floor mounted B&M shifter allows it to shift nice and smooth plus adds a ratchet action for concise manual shifting when desired. The P R N D 2 1 indicator lights in the gauge cluster work as designed so you know what gear you're in. No other '79 Hilux that's ever lived has this trick feature.
SUSPENSION,WHEELS and TIRES:Because virtually every part in the front end is new, including the power steering gear box and pitman arm plus the center link, it drives exceptionally tight, just like a new truck. It feels light & tight like a Go-Kart or race truck. No rattles, clunks or squeaks. The ceramic brake pads and organic shoes are new on all 4 corners, as are the front V6 calipers, rear wheel cylinders and master cylinder. 4 new KYB shocks make the ride smooth with nice rebound dampening. The sway bar bushings and end links are new. The truck has been lowered 2 inches so the cornering is quicker and that makes the ride a bit stiffer than stock. The 2 rear tires are brand new 27x10.5x15 Mickey Thompson Radials mounted and balanced on 15x8 Weld aluminum wheels. The fronts are a pair of older 225/60R15 radials with plenty of tread mounted and balanced on 2 SuperLite aluminum wheels. There is no spare or jack but the spare tire carrier winch is still mounted under the bed and functions normally. Get a Triple AAA RV Plus policy every year and you don't worry about flats but there's plenty of options to carry spares if desired.
DIFFERENTIAL:This rear end is the hot setup for a Toyota race truck. It's extremely rare that you find a 30 spline Toyota (same splines as the 4x4) rear end with 5 lug axles under a 2WD Toyota but Grabber is fitted with one from a 1986 Motor Home including the super strong and rare 8 inch differential with factory 3.07 gears. A professionally installed Detroit True-Trac full carrier positraction limited slip locker was also installed along with 85/140 synthetic gear oil. The truck's longer wheelbase with the fatter sticky Mickey Thompsons hooking up with both wheel traction means she really launches out of the hole with almost zero wheel spin.
INTERIOR:Exceptionally nice and clean for the age with original vinyl floor and bench seat. There is some sun cracking on the vinyl dash under the carpet cover. If you don't like the carpet, replacement dashes are available on eBay for under $100. Everything on the Tundra gauge cluster works as designed with accurate tach, speedo, odometer, oil pressure, temp, voltage and fuel level. All the lights, signals and electrics work except the horn. The Tundra turn signal & wiper switch column cluster has also been incorporated along with the column bezel. The steering wheel is quick release. Push a thumb lever and it pops off so you can carry it away which is a great security feature. It's also a smaller diameter than stock which prevents your hands from hitting the turn signal and wiper levers when turning. The smaller size is also perfect for how quick, tight and responsive this truck's steering is. The bench seat features a fold down arm rest. The window regulators work as designed. Odometer reads 110k and the truck won't need anything but fluids and filters for another 100k miles. The AC blows ice cold utilizing a pair of toggle switches on the dash (one activates the compressor and the other the fans) plus a condenser, dryer & dual fans from a '91 Lexus LS400 mounted behind the cab under a liftable shroud on hinges in the bed that houses the Optima Yellow Top Deep Cycle Battery that can be shut off with a red marine switch. The AC compressor is a brand new Denso unit for an 01 Tundra. The 134A freon and fittings are all new. The only thing missing from the interior is the clear plastic dome light lens cover. There is no heater. The weather's too nice in Tucson to need it. There's several routes you can make one work if desired.
FRAME and BODY:Fully boxed factory steel frame this truck has no rust. None. Call it virtually zero. By that I mean if you were to scrape every speck of rust off this truck including on the exhaust you would have to take all that dust and multiply it by 500 and you still wouldn't exceed the weight allowed by a 1st class postage stamp envelope. Just look at the factory sheet metal from the underside pictures. I can send you more if you text the number below. It was originally this Grabber green color from the factory (a 79-80 year only color designated Paint Code 6C5). 1979 was still the 70's after all and Toyota was trying to glom onto the last of that candyass American Peter Max craze. You can tell from the interior kick panels that it was born 6C5.It was then repainted white at some point which is how I found it. But after seeing that Grabber green on the kick panels I wanted to repaint the stock 6C5 which was done a few years ago. Truckhas never been wrecked withno rust or bondo but has some small paint chips and cracks have developed, particularly near the ends of the bedsides where cargo inside the bed would bump make small depressions that crack and chip the paint. The hood was made from two 1979 hoods by a skilled craftsman named AA in order to accomodate the taller engine. Shortly after making the perfect hood AA left the hood pins out and drove it away. The hood flew up and got slightly bent as did the cowl. The hood was straightened out but the cowl (where the wiper arms mount) still has small dents and paint chips. The bed is 8 feet long. The AC condensor box in the back only takes up 2.5 feet. That still leaves more useable bed space for utility than a 4 door Tacoma.
RACING LEGACY:Grabber has never been raced professionally but in the 1000 or so miles I've driven it on the streets of Tucson since it's been built it should be noted that it's never had a check engine light nor mechanical issue of any kind. During those miles there were a couple stop lights where Mustang GT's were humiliated, along with more than 1 Ricer boys in Hondas who just didn't know what they were dealing with. In January 2018 the Street Outlaws taped an event in Tucson where I did enter Grabber in the locals no prep class where it blasted its one and only time down a 1/8th mile track shown here and I apologize in advance for the poor quality video which was taken by the crew of the opposing team running a '73 Celica with 500 HP Turbo 4 Cylinder - a car that weighed only 1900 lbs from the factory:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfVSwQ83sXY. Of the 200 local cars enteredthat day Grabber was the only single vehicle to drive over 25 miles on the street to the track, then compete, then drive the 25 miles home, at night no less!
INSURANCE:This vehicle is eligible for historic plates in any state. That also means it's eligible for Collector Car insurance from outfits like Grundy Worldwide or Haggerty which costs only $12 per month for a $10,000 full coverage policy. That's right. A stated $10k full coverage collector car insurance policy is only $12 per month and emissions are forever waived. I repeat. Collector Car Insurance is not only super cheap but also emissions are waived. The 1st year after building this truck I got it registered in Tucson no problem after a referee inspection. The next year I obtained a Grundy Collector Car Policy so no more emissions. If new buyer wants to go that route I'll send them my Grundy policy # so when you call Grundy you can give them that # plus the VIN # and when you tell them you're the new owner I suspect smooth sailing on a new cheap emissions free policy because they're used to collector cars changing hands on the auction circuit.
PAPERWORK:Clean and clear notarized Arizona title is ready to go. Drivetrain has 109,000 miles. Hilux chassis has 154,000 miles. Receipts documenting most all the important new parts and labor of the build included. Got tons of extra pics downloaded if you need more.
INVESTMENT:Because of their exceptional engineering and reliability these Toyota Hilux pickups only go up in value every year even while you drive them, providing one of the best investments in the automotive world today, bar none. Fact is there will never be another made like them. They're 1 off legends, as important as American Muscle cars, and are getting exceptionally hard to find in this condition. Especially this one. If not now then soon this truck will be a bargain at twice the price. Don't believe it? Well a 1983 Hilux just sold for $55,000 at auction:https://www.barrett-jackson.com/Events/Event/Details/1983-TOYOTA-SR5-4X4-PICKUP-221930
OH WHAT A FEELING:
There's many reasons Toyota trucks are so legendary worldwide. It's no accident that no matter what part of the world you look at whenever you see news footage of guerrilla fighter soldiers with AK47s in the back of a pickup it's always a Toyota. Just find a counter-example? That's because Toyota truck reliability is 2nd to none. It's what soldiers count on. That's why Toyota is the only import vehicle ever allowed to compete in NASCAR racing. I wouldn't hesitate to jump in this truck and drive it from Tucson to New York City feeling confident it would need nothing but gasoline.
CONTACT:
Please call 52O-Nine 77-O112 before clicking anythingso I can verify you're a legitimate buyer in control of your account. There's been a rash of impulsivos lurking on ebay lately. They apparently don't appreciate how much time and money goes into preparing a historic vehicle like this for a public auction, as if it's some kind of video game?
FEEDBACK:If you have ZERO feedback and are serious about this truckthen before doing anything please be sure to call the number above so we can establish that you're not a squirrel. It won't take more than a couple minutes so please just do it or your offer will be cancelled. Unfortunately this is required due to the notorious reputation of eBay rookies for being impulsive non-paying bidders.
IMPORTANT AUCTION TERMS SO PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:Please do not click BUY NOW or SUBMIT OFFER without 1st calling the number above. If you do not call we will have no choice but to cancel your bid or offer. Unfortunately this step is required to ensure that you are a legit eBayer in control of your account with funds in place.
As noted from the outset, per the eBay "Terms of Service" (TOS) that you agreed to when registering your OFFER, should it be accepted, "constitutes a legally binding contract for sale" so please don't click if you're not committed to buy with funds in place and wife's permission. Please also make sure the phone number and address you have registered with eBay is current and if you're planning to use PayPal for the deposit that you have liquid funds ready to go that are not in the form of an E-Check which takes 5 or more days to clear, in other words, be a responsible bidder whose got their act together and doesn't have a bunch of excuses after the act.
Inspection prior to bidding is welcome as vintage vehicles are always sold AS IS with no warranty expressed or implied.
PAYMENT TERMS:A non-refundable deposit of $1000 either viaonline PayPal payment orcard over phone or emailed invoice through Square.com is due within 24 hours of auction close. I would prefer Square but that's ultimately buyer's choice.
Full balance of Payment is due within 72 hours of auction close by either direct bank to bank wire transfer, or you can overnight envelope a Cashiers Check, or pay cash in person.PayPal for the full balance is NOT an option, however a credit or debit card payment through Square.com is, so long as buyer is willing to pay the 3% fees.
SHIPPING:All shipping arrangements and costs are the responsibility of the buyer however we will always help your shipper coordinate the loading to the best of our ability. It all begins by calling the number above. Starting from zip code 85705 figure shipping any vehicle East of the Mississippi averages $900. West is considerably less depending where? We will store the vehicle free for 21 days after sale. There is a $15 per day storage fee thereafter unless other arrangements are pre-dickered. Note that many naive eBayers imagine that they'll jump on a plane to Tucson, pay in cash in person, and drive the truck home. In most cases that's wrong. Not because the truck will have issues but rather because you won't get cheap airfare to Tucson, you won't have legal plates driving home, you won't have a jack and spare, you're almost certain to get a speeding ticket or two in this truck, and the overall trip costs plus gas winds up being way more than you think.
FYI: This body style is known as the 1st Generation Pickup which ran from 1979 through 1983. Yes there were other versions prior to 1979 but "1st Gen" refers to this body style being the 1st generation of the 4x4 mini truck.
