Car description

1938 Oldsmobile Touring Sedan

Oldsmobile was considered a wealthy man's car, and ads of the day utilized businessmen in large houses going to their car often greeted by the hired hand who just finished washing and polishing the car for its ride to work.

Available now from our consignment halls, a former member of a prestigious private collection, a 2-door version of the touring sedan. She shows fairly nicely with slight rust on some seams, and a few dents and dings. The interior is pure 1930's with mohair and overstuffed seating. The engine is unrestored but is all there. Overall fair condition awaiting some TLC.

Exterior
Original paint was coded 48 which would show up as Dorset Gray, however a dark blue respray has been put on several years ago. Body panels show fairly straight with consistent gaps. The rounded exterior fenders have a few dents but present overall nicely. Up front is a large V curved inward grille flanked on either side by bullet style headlight casing and round chrome bezels. On the bottom is a bumper stretching across the front, and the condition of all this chrome is fair with dimpling, dulling and pitting. As we move towards the passenger compartment, and the split front windshield a central trim piece guides us there from the hood ornament. On the sides are trim spears which run the length of the car, through the doors and to the rear of this car, culminating at the taillights. Rounded fenders are sharing the edges of a running board on both sides. Some rust is noted where these running boards meet the rear fenders. On back is a spacious trunk covered by a humpback trundled, and a single bumper below. Painted body matching blue wheels are covered in dulled dog dish wheel covers with a central Olds badge. Medium wide white bias ply tires are covering the wheels on all 4 corners.

Interior
Yards of tan broadcloth with dark vertical striping cover the door panels. The original chromed handles with their bakelite knobs are still present. In front and nicely covered tan split bench seat which show no rips or tears and are in good condition. Climbing into the back bench it is beautifully covered with matching tan broadcloth, and sports overstuffed arms complete with ashtray on either side. Carpeting covers the floors, and despite being a 2 door, there is plenty of space in the back as well as plenty of window to gaze at the countryside as you cruise by it. The dash is original and unrestored, and suffers from some dulling, fading yellowing of plastic coverings, and dimpling on the metal. It is a heavy design borrowing from the Art Deco motif of the era that was all the rage. The original steering wheel fronts this dash and is also unrestored. The lighter headliner shows some water damage but remains tight.

Drivetrain
Under the large hood we see the factory specified 230ci inline 6-cylinder engine. This has plenty of surface rust and a 1-barrel carburetor on top. A 3-speed manual transmission is on back. Currently the engine is inoperable but does turn over.

Undercarriage
A coating of surface rust is seen on the X frame and floorpans as well as suspension and rockers. There are a few small areas of invasive rust, and former repairs to said rust, but the car remains structurally sound.

A good looker overall, from an era where mostly the wealthy could afford an automobile of such panache. Surprisingly lots of room in the back of this car, and plenty of storage for the luggage. Nice interior, and good exterior give this an overall rating of fair to good depending upon where you are looking.
