1973 Mercedes Benz 280SEL 4.5 in Memphis,Tn

Offered without reserve!

Wow! It's been a long time since I have driven such a stately old Mercedes-Benz.

You are bidding on a 1973 Mercedes-Benz 280SEL 4.5 This will be the 531st vehicle that I have listed and sold here in this forum since 1998.

What began as an experiment has now become a career! Twenty one years on Ebay!

A bit of history on this 280SEL....

This 280SEL was purchased by my neighbor, Rolf as a used car from Mercedes-Benz of Memphis (formerly Robertson Motors) in Fall of 1973. Rolf re-badged the car as a 300SEL for vanity reasons, I suppose.

Rolf owned and maintained the car for many years (I have the records), at some point in the late 1980's he divorced his wife and gave her the car. She maintained the car and they remained friends. Around 1987 or so, she traded the Mercedes in on a newer W126.

Rolf then immediately flew to Boca Raton and re-purchased the Mercedes from the dealership where his former wife had traded it, and drove the car back to Memphis.

Rolf kept the car from 1987 until 2009 when he traded the car back to Mercedes-Benz of Memphis on a new Mercedes.

Mercedes-Benz of Memphis called me in 2009, as I have been buying their trades for around 25 years now. I picked up the car and drove it for a few weeks, and sold it to a local buyer from my dealership in 2009.
Last Summer, the retail customer who purchased the car sold it back to my dealership.
The prior owner painted the car black (albeit, very cheaply) the original color was 423H, light ivory.
So, I have owned this car twice, and the owner from 1973 has owned it twice..
This W108 runs very well and would benefit from a cosmetic restoration.
Here's a link to my Google photo archive of over 200 photos of the car.
The car needs a new home. It's unrestored and it's 46 years old. It does run and shift well. The floors seem solid, but there are areas of rust around the lower fenders and rockers, which is common on the W108/W109 cars. The car did recieve Ziebart treatment at some point, so it did protect the frame.
I have driven this car on the interstate to work a few times. It does run/stop/drive pretty well. The driver's power window will need attention. The a/c did work last Summer. The car has just over 100k original miles. A cursory review of the records indicates that it was well cared for over it's life. The car needs a new owner who wants to drive and slowly restore the car. You are most welcome to call or text me at 901-870-3347 if you have any questions about this Mercedes.
