Ultra-rare vehicle, MASSIVE attention getter, unlike anything else!
This stunning, completely original 1986 Mercedes G-Wagon looks virtually identical to a 2012+ model, virtually NOBODY believes it’s a classic! Driving this beauty around town is a true rockstar experience: countless people asking questions, stopping to take photos, endless honks, thumbs up, and waves in traffic. Everyone wonders how/where you got it.
The car spent most of its life in Monaco, in the dry, Mediterranean climate. It was briefly in Italy, before being imported to the USA. Virtually all of these vintage Mercedes from the UK, Germany, and similar countries are completely rusted due to harsh elements, road salts, and snow. Plus it’s factory LHD, not a conversion of questionably quality.
This example was lovingly looked after by its previous owners and it shows. The photos speak for themselves: the time, money, and energy put into maintenance/restoration is truly astounding. This G-Wagon hasn’t been beaten to death off-roading, nor has it received “upgrades“ that destroy its character. It has truly retained its factory appearance, spirit, and feel. It's bone stock, aside from the Alpine head unit.
The vehicle's been documented by the Historical Car Association of Italy, paperwork is included with the sale. It recently had a complete service/inspection at Mercedes.
It’s impossible to tally up all the work performed throughout the years. Some of the more recent items include:
-
ORIGINAL factory paint, in excellent condition, very few imperfections.
-
New battery.
-
Newer tires.
-
Upgraded suspension: shocks, bushings, slight lift, etc.
-
New Bosch glow plugs on all cylinders
Notes about major components:
I’ll try to document the plusses and minuses as accurately as possible, and I’m happy to provide any additional pictures, clarification, or details!
Engine: starts up instantly every time, no waiting on glow plugs, no excessive cranking. PLENTY of torque, especially when running in 4L. Absolutely zero overheating issues, whether stuck in a traffic or going all out on the highway. Even incredibly hot Florida weather’s no match for this cooling system, handles it with ease. There’s no diesel exhaust smoke, the engine's finely tuned, piston rings strong, etc. Luckily it’s exempt from emissions testing (over 25 years old), you could even register it in California without issues or smog checks.
Transmission: smooth engaging clutch, absolutely no slippage, with plenty of life remaining. Shifts into all gears with zero issues. The lever is tight, with no play.
Paintwork: factory original, in outstanding condition, shines extremely well. There’s a tiny ding on the driver’s door (please see closeup photo), which could easily be corrected if desired. In the spirit of keeping the vehicle exactly as it came off the showroom, it's been left alone. There is a spot or two of very minor surface oxidization, which could be easily addressed.
Interior: completely bone stock, including the dashboard (no cracks). Steering wheel, gauge cluster, instruments, and door panels are original. The seats look brand new. All of the interior rubber pieces are in perfect shape : both shift boots, weatherstripping, etc.
Speedometer: currently displaying 6,473 kilometers, or approximately 4,000 miles. This obviously isn't correct, however given the general condition of the vehicle, the true figure's VERY low.
Wheels: in perfect condition, with brand new tires. The vehicle tracks completely straight down the road: while driving, braking, etc., absolutely no wandering.
Suspension: No strange noises, everything's tight and solid.
Other Notes
The truck's ready to go and doesn't need any work. Drive it as-is without issues.
VIN Number is: WDB46033217045033.
Insurance's available from any collector car company (Hagerty, Grundy, etc.), along from more traditional names such as GEICO and State Farm. Policies are ridiculously cheap, a tiny fraction of regular car insurance.
Financing's available from Woodside Credit, J.J. Best Banc & Co., LightStream, etc. VERY easy to get this done, all three companies specialize in these types of vehicles. Considering values have been increasing dramatically over the years, this can be a lucrative opportunity (high loan to value ratios and rock bottom interest rates).
Local buyers are welcome to inspect the vehicle in person, or if you're out of town, we'll work with your third-party inspection service. Payment is also accepted via escrow.com (which provides a 7 day inspection period before the funds are released). However, their fees are relatively high, and airfare is fairly inexpensive. It’s likely easier to deal in person.
We can ship this truck anywhere in the world, please contact us for a quote.
