Offered for sale, from KURT TANNER MOTORCARS, is this very original, very early 1967 production 280 SL Convertible, car number #43. 280 SL production started along the Mercedes assembly line in December of that year, and this is historically early European car left the factory with lots of the desirable options mentioned above. This car was recently purchased from it's long term Louisiana owner from the 1980's. The car was last registered for road use in 1991 and has been in storage since. It is a wonderful candidate for restoration, still retaining it's 100% original interior in good usable condition, along with a near mint condition dashboard facia. This car has never been apart for restoration, is 100% complete, and is showing only one repaint in it's original color. The body on the car is extremely good with excellent panel fit and gapping. The doors, hood, and trunk all fit perfectly and click shut. There are some noted areas in the pictures of isolated rust spots, mainly the trunk floor, some corrosion around the rear of the cockpit, and the front lower LH fender and front of the driver's floor. The rest of the car is extremely solid and completely accident-free, with perfectly fitting headlamps and rims, never even being "tapped" in the front. The original hardtop fits the car well. The grille fit is excellent.
The engine compartment is extremely original with mostly original clips, clamps, hoses, etc. The car's engine currently does not turn or run from years of sitting, but no attempt has been made to soak the bores or free it. The oil level looks fine and up to the mark. Everything inside the valve cover looks clean.
Most of the chromework and other brightwork on the car is in exceptional overall condition, where a lot of the items can be simply removed, cleaned or polished, and re-installed. Some larger items such as the bumpers and light housings, would need a replate for perfect results. The car still retains original items like rubber, hose clamps, etc. The previous owner attempted some very minor disassembly on the driver's door and some trim items, but everything was carefully saved, bagged, and tagged (pictures). The car needs a new windshield, but all of the other glass is original and in beautiful condition. The car's tailight lenses, headlamps, and other important items look very nice and would definitely be used again with minor effort. The car's interior trim is amazingly well-preserved and in very good condition. It would benefit from a deep cleaning and detailing, some repairs, and a carpet kit. It would be wonderful addition to the restoration to retain the car's original interior. The car is sold with it's original spare tire, jack, and jack handle.
Overall, this extremely early 280 SL presented here is a rare find with it's European specification, 4-speed manual gearbox, hardtop, and air conditioning. It is finished in a handsome and rich factory color scheme. It is a well-preserved, original, never-been-apart example, making restoration of this car very straightforward.
