- BELOW IS THE HISTORY AS TOLD BY THE OWNER-

This Lotus Cortina, MK-Iwas purchased originally in Pensacola, Florida by major Billy C. Turner of Egland A.F.B., FL on December 28, 1966. Turner contacted Ross Bremer to test drive the car in January of 1967 with the intent of having Bremer enter the car in the Daytona 24-Hour in February 1967. The car’s initial test outing at the Osceola track in Central Florida was successful.

A friend of Bremer’s, Don Kearney, set up the team and finished the prepping. Bremer entered the car and Turner got a license to drive based on his jet pilot’s license. Robert Fretina, although listed as a driver, was unable to get his license and thus did not drive. Bremer entered the car in the 24-Hours and Kearney and Bremer co-drove until the last five laps when they turned it over to Turner to finish. The car was numbered #89 for the race and finished 21st (moved to 22nd) in the official count, third in class (under 2 liter touring). Hal Williamson’s 2-liter Porsche was first, a Volvo was second. We won $700.00 which just paid for the tires and dinner. Turner drove the car back to Pensacola. FL. The car was entered as car #43 by Turner in the Sebring 4-Hour Trans Am in 1967. DNF on the hairpin sandbank on lap 19. Turner drove it home after the event.

Turner sold the car to Coit F.M. Twiss IV, who stored it for fifteen years after a dash fire. It was found and restored by Talmadge (Ted) W. Atkins who moved to N. J. with it.He raced two vintage events in 1989 with it.Atkins sold it to Bremer, January 1992. Bremer returned to Daytona (the 24 Minutes of Daytona) in 1993 and in multiple years afterward. The car is retired from racing and is now used for street and vintage touring. It was featured in the “100th Anniversary of Ford Racing” in Greenfield Village, Detroit in October 2001.
