Car description |
---|
Exterior: Repainted 40 years ago but still looks great. Shines well and will draw a crowd where ever you stop. **The search and rescue door signs are magnetic and easily removed***Very straight with a few small dings, one in hood and one in rear hatch - they are hard to see in pics. A few rock chips on driver side front fender, and a few scratches on top of roof. Glass is good and chrome has all been re-plated to a high standard, inside and out. Very dry Western Jeep, never seen salt, and underside and floors look good. Of course we don't see frame rot here out west. I'd say at least 95 percent rust free, there are a couple of pencil tip size blisters at bottom of tailgate and a spot where the floor meets the tailgate. Underneath there are a couple of small areas on one floor support on each side where mud was kicked off the front tires and held moisture, causing corrosion. See close up detail pics in Photobucket album below. Nothing hidden with undercoat or seam sealer, what you see is what you get. None of those small areas have gotten worse in the last 40 years since the restoration, and shouldn't need attention unless you plan to drive in the salt. None of the sitting-at-the-bottom of a lake rot that you see so often on these early Jeeps from other parts of the country.
Interior: Completely redone by local upholstery shop years ago and still appears new. Shows very well, interior chrome was re-plated at the same time and new front floor mat was installed. Glass is good. Most everything works including radio, heater, wipers, lights, horn(moved to button on column), and parking brake. Rear interior carpet was popular at the time, and after 40 years, it's come back in style :) Some of the aftermarket gauges aren't hooked up. No rodent damage or smells. Again, just a really nice old Jeep for Cars-N-Coffee or weekend shows.
Mechanical: Original 226 Super Hurricane with 3 speed transmission and 4wd system with original drive flange hubs. Starts, runs and drives fine for this era of vehicle and 4wd works well. Most everything functions including lights, wipers, radio, heater, and parking brake. Many of the aftermarket gauges are not hooked up, speedometer and vacuum gauge do work. Usable as is, but if you haven't driven an old Jeep from 1959, adjust your expectations accordingly. It's low geared and 60mph is the absolute top speed. Engine will need a refresh at some point in the future, does use some oil and a trained mechanic's ear will hear a main bearing rattle at light throttle when it's fully warmed up. It's fine as is for putting to shows and parades. I was quoted $2k for a rebuild from the local engine shop, but for what I used the Jeep for I couldn't justify it. Your needs and wants for the Jeep may be different. When I got it the tires were ancient, so I put brand new 7.50-16 bias traction tires on it last year from Nebraska Tire. Probably should have bought radials, as these bias plies follow every rut in the road -but they have the pie crust look that just seems right. There is play in the steering, as is typical for these rigs, and the tires didn't help that. My uncle and Grandpa both had these wagons and they all wandered. If you're used to modern rigs, and plan to do a lot of driving, radial tires will be needed and possibly some front end work. No major leaks, a few drips off oil pan and transfer case, but nothing horrible. Above all, this is a vintage vehicle, it's not new and will need work from time to time.
Pricing/Misc: NO RESERVE and will sell. I imagine it will sell for less than half the cost of new paint, interior, and chrome on a Willys like this. If you've been looking at vintage 4x4s lately, you know that they are very hot and prices are climbing to the stratosphere. This Jeep runs and drives, but flying in and driving it home isn't an option due to low gearing. Montana is a huge state with many remote areas with no cell service or roadside assistance. Reasonable transport is available, I will drive it to meet your transporter and help load it. Title is clear and in my name, buyer will need to get insurance upon purchase as I will cancel mine. I will store it after sale for 30 days, after that $100/month storage will be due. Also, the consecutive serial number indicates the end of 1958 production, but it is titled as a 1959 as was common when a Willys didn't sell at the end of the model year and was carried over.
