Car description

This is a Protecto-plated equipped REAL 1970 SS396 El Camino. I heard about this car about three years ago from the body shop that repainted my 1969 Firebird (Google 69brrrd) and decided to investigate. An employee had stored it for about 10 years in his garage and was ready to sell because he could not afford to restore it. It had about 88,000 original miles on it and needed minor repairs to make it run. I have documentation to back up this mileage. The engine had been rebuilt in Texas at about 43,000 miles and it had a small overbore from the original 30 over from the factory but they reused the original heads and everything else. I have all of the original parts including the camshaft, cast iron heads and exhaust manifolds and intake manifold that I will supply with the car. I replaced the heads with Speedmaster high flow square port aluminum ones with roller rockers and a Voodoo Cam, installed an aluminum intake, aluminum compressor, gear reduction starter, radiator and water pump and long tube ceramic coated headers which reduced the front end weight by 200 lbs.(I carefully weighed all of the swapped components and compared the weights to come to this figure and I can supply the numbers if you like.)I replaced the front end components with tubular control arms and QA1 adjustable coilovers. I installed matching front and rear Hotchkis sway bars, rear adjustable upper and tubular lower links, an Eaton posi with the original 3:31 ratio 12-bolt rear axle and rebuilt the brakes with a late model booster and a Corvette master cylinder.. I installed EBC Yellowstuff front pads and new rear drums and shoes. Last summer I replaced the tired Turbo400 with a Monster Transmissions 700R4 with a remote electronic torque converter lock-out. I also replaced the carburetor with Edelbrock TBI fuel injection which greatly improved the cold starting, fuel economy and drive-ability. I cleaned and rebuilt the original factory air conditioning and replaced the old condenser with a modern cross flow style condenser and aluminum compressor and converted it to R134 refrigerant. It has 18 inch Boss gloss black center rims with 255/40x18 and 295/35x18 Continental Extreme Contact DW tires. It has a custom 2.5 inch dual exhaust system with remote-controlled electric cutouts and stainless resonators.According to my interpretation of the data tag on the firewall this was originally an E34 402/350hp engine. With the 040 overbore it's now closer to a 408 cu. in. The original paint code is 48B which was Forest Green with a black vinyl top. The car was repainted in Texas in the 80's I think with Dallas Cowboys colors, pearl white with dark blue stripes on the cowl flapper hood. It has almost no rust but could really use a repaint. The production date is 02D which is February, 4th week. ST70 13680 KAN is 1970 El Camino, Kansas City plant. The L stands for hood stripes. It was originally equipped with a Rochester carb and 3:31 non-posi axle. It of course has the round instrument gauges only available on the big block SS cars. The ammeter and temp gauge no longer work but I have installed a voltmeter, mechanical temp gauge and oil pressure gauge cluster under the dash. I have also installed a center armrest/storage compartment with cupholders and it is a column shift because originally was a bench seat car. I have installed Summit Racing buckets with integrated seat heaters. It has a rubber bed liner and I also replaced the headliner.I have driven this car almost daily to work about 12 miles each way and It never overheats or uses any oil and handles great. I have put about 10,000 miles on it in two years and it's a blast to drive mostly because it gets a LOT of attention!. The Edelbrock fuel injection system with integrated optional distributor/ignition module is tuneable from an app available for any android phone or tablet.
