Car description

1967 Chevrolet C-10 CST – Complete Mechanical Restoration

1967 Chevrolet Fleetside Custom Sport Truck (CST) that spent it’s entire life in Oklahoma until I purchased in February of 2011. This project was a labor of love with receipts in hand for the rebuild that exceeds $19,000.00. Odometer shows 76,942 miles, the clear title shows 101,562 miles.

This long bed truck was delivered to it’s original owner on 10/8/66 at Allan Winham Chevrolet in Lawton, OK, documented with the Protect-O-Plate and original owner’s manual that come with the truck. This is an original CST and not just a CST badged C-10. Factory undercoating saved this C-10 and was applied everywhere including the inside of door skins and underside of hood. Truck has the wood bed (option #4E81AB), see glove box decal.

I wanted a rust-free C-10 that had real patina that only comes after spending 40 years in the sun and one I could drive anywhere. Also wanted it to perform on the street and preserve the way I found it. The cab and bed have never been off the frame, other than that most every nut and bolt has been taken apart and replaced. Other than door beltline/felt run channels and vent windows, the cab has been totally gone through. As you will read below, the best of everything was used in this project and wherever possible, NOS parts used. The Build Notebook goes to the new owner.

With exception of passenger side outer rocker panel and a smalls section on the pinch weld of the driver’s side rocker panel, this is a rust-free C-10. The radiator core support had some rust in the bottom radiator section so it was replaced with a new Goodmark core support. Cab corners, all fenders, hood and doors are rust free. The floor pan had minimal surface rust near pinch weld on inside to the left of the driver’s seat. Original white factory chalk markings remain on the firewall.

The orange exterior finish (PPG paint code 516 60156) is original. When I purchased the truck the roof was as shown in the pictures with the Indigo Ivory paint burnt off in most areas down to the factory primer except around the rear window. In order to preserve the cab, the roof was prepped and drip rails totally resealed with correct sealant and repainted with red oxide lacquer primer then clear coat lacquer to preserve the way I found it. The front fenders were machine polished with a #3 compound to bring back some luster, that’s as far as I got. The hood, doors, cab and bed have not been polished. The wood bed has been replaced some time ago with oak. Bottom of doors had very minimal surface rust and in order to keep it as original as possible, the surface was prepped, sealed and lacquered for preservation (project intent!).At one time California mirrors were installed, so those holes in the door skins were filled and painted with touch up paint.

ENGINE: Is the original 327 to this truck (internally balanced in '67) and professionally rebuilt by Fall Automotive Machine in Toledo, OH. 500 miles are on the truck since the initial startup, has never seen a drag strip.

Block has been decked, bored .030”, KB flat top HYP390 alloy pistons, GM steel rods, balanced assembly, original GM forged crankshaft turned .010”/.010”. PowerBond street performance steel harmonic balancer with engraved degree marks and needle pointer.

Built to static 9:25 compression ratio for pump gas, all ARP fasteners, Melling 55-S1 oil pump, Lunati Voodoo Retro-fit hydraulic roller cam (262/270) and lifters. Camshaft was degreedto Lunati specification. All Fel-Pro gaskets. Comp Cams timing cover, timing set, push rod guides and Magnum roller tip rocker arms. World Products Sportsman II cast iron 72 CC straight plug heads (2.02/1.60 valves) with matching Lunati performance valve springs assembled and set-up by Fall Automotive Machine. Weiand Street Warrior aluminum intake, Jet Performance Products Stage II Quadrajet is connected to a Lokar stainless steel throttle cable.

Hooker ceramic coated 1-5/8” exhaust headers. The Hooker pre-bent 16522HKR exhaust system and Summit fully welded turbo mufflers are all in the boxes and not yet installed, go with the truck. Cherry Bomb 8” (body length) shortys are bolted up now, wear ear plugs. Note with the current exhaust, it will not meet state requirements! With installation of this street legal exhaust, drive this truck anywhere.

New GMB water pump and TCI performance starter coupled to brand new American Wire engine bay wiring harness with heat shielded wires. Alternator and regulator are original, works great . New mechanical fuel pump, Proform Parts HEI performance distributor, billet hold down, Chevrolet Performance red 8mm plug wires and Accel spark plugs.

Radiator and heater core have been boiled out, pressure checked and repaired as necessary. New radiator hoses, 180 degree thermostat and Fel-Pro housing gasket.

TRANSMISSION: The original Turbo Hydramtic 400 that this truck was built with has undergone a total $2,125.00 Level II performance rebuild by Gearstar Performance in Akron, OH. New Gearstar 1,400 stall convertor, TCI SFI approved flexplate with ARP fasteners. The Hayden oil cooler is connected directly to the transmission. Runs Castrol TransMax DEX6 fluid. Transmission and motor mounts replaced.

CAB/INTERIOR/GLASS: Inside of cab was completely disassembled. Years of Oklahoma dirt were cleaned from inside of doors, under dash and windshield cowl including fresh air ducts. The CST bench seat in 1967 (& 68) used a full foam lower seat cushion for max comfort. Have invested over $1,100.00 in the professional restoration of the bench seat that includes original fabric as used in 67 & 68, and similar vintage vinyl, all custom stitched to the 1968 pattern that I preferred over the 1967 pattern. Seat can be moved forward and backwards by lifting the lever on the driver’s side. New gray dash pad and arm rests installed.

Glass is all tinted, a nice option, looks great too. Back glass is original and has been removed and a new Steele Products window gasket installed. New windshield and Steele Products gasket installed also. Vent windows will need replaced or rebuilt and belt line/run channels in doors as well. I do not have these replacement parts, new owner must purchase and install if desired. New pair of window regulators from United Pacific still in box go with truck.

Floor pan had very minimal surface rust in a few places so that was prepped, primed, sealed and shot with lacquer. Dynamat was used throughout. New pre-formed 80/20 16 ounce loop silver carpet with 40 ounce padding was installed. New OES silver sun visors were installed, rear view mirror is original. Inside cab light that was part of the Custom Group option works.

Windshield wipers work, has original Trico aluminum arms. Washer pump does not work.

Original instrument panel has been totally disassembled, cleaned and reinstalled. As original as this truck is, I believe the instrument cluster/speedometer to be original to the vehicle and untouched. Speedometer works (could use new cable) as does fuel gauge. Oil pressure gauge worked but has been disconnected in favor of an Auto Meter Ultra-Lite oil pressure gauge (w/digital stepper motor). Ammeter gauge did not work however a matching Auto Meter voltmeter was installed along with a water temperature gauge ($475 + invested) for all three.

The CST glove box door is original with the service parts/option label on the backside, see photo. New glove box liner installed.

New Steele Products door weatherstrip set (for cab to door) #70-1426-72 comes with truck needs to be installed, as do new CST design gray door cards (molded in plastic, not vinyl) and new window regulators from United Pacific.

Heater box has been totally rebuilt, blower motor works and blower switch is new OES however blower will not run when you hit switch, needs attention.

REAR AXLE/DRIVESHAFT: Original GM 12 bolt non-posi rear axle with the 3:73 gear set. Gear oil has been changed and new wheel bearings installed. One of 3 u-joints has been replaced, center bearing has not been.

SUSPENSION/STEERING/STEERING COLUMN: Front suspension has been totally rebuilt with Moog chassis parts. Upper and lower control arms are factory design and have been disassembled, new seals and greased. All new tie rod ends, lube changed out in manual gear box. Steering is manual, no power assist.

New front and rear shocks, bushings in rear trailing arms have not been replaced. Steering column with column shift lever has been totally rebuilt. The only thing that has not been completed on the column is the installation of the horn ring contact and install of the CST horn ring, all come with truck. To my knowledge the horn itself works and is mounted in the factory location. Turn signals work but do not cancel automatically. A new OES Delco Remy turn signal switch assembly goes with the truck just in case. Flashers do not work, have not checked it out but believe the problem to be in the turn signal switch or flasher connector in original fuse panel.

BRAKES: Drum on all 4 corners, no power assist. New brake drums, wheel cylinders (new, not rebuilt), shoes, hardware, hoses, master cylinder and proportioning valve.

TIRES/RIMS/WHEEL COVERS: P205 75/R15 front tires were purchased in 2010, tread like new. P235 75/R15 rear tires purchased in 2017. Tires run on the original 6 lug steel rims that the truck was built with. Spare tire is brand new and sits in the factory spare tire carrier under rear of truck. Wheel covers are optional stainless steel GM accessory items for 1967, hard to find.

Original bottle jack, jack handle and lug wrench remain with this vehicle.

FACTORY OPTIONS: As listed on the glove box option/service parts decal, this truck came with the following options: 327 engine option, Chrome front bumper, ammeter-oil gauge, wood pick-up box floor, deluxe – air heater with side vents, tinted glass, heavy duty rear spring, side trim molding, large rear panoramic rear window, Turbo Hydra-Matic trans, custom group (AZ62AG).
