There is quite a bit of copy & detail in this auction. you will have to scroll down all the way to see the large amount of Excellent Hi-definition digital photos. What was new and available from Chevy for 1966? The 1966 Impala received only a minor facelift from its predecessor that included a revised horizontal bar grille up front and new triple rectangular taillights that replaced the triple round lights used on full-sized Chevy's each year since 1958 with the exception of 1959. and chrome beltline strips were added in response to complaints about parking lot door dings on the clean-lined '65 models. The standard column-shift three-speed manual was now full synchronized. and a new 250-cubic-inch six-cylinder engine replaced the previous 230-cubic-inch six while the 195-horsepower 283-cubic-inch Turbo Fire V-8 remained the base V-8 engine. Optional engines included a 275-horsepower 327-cubic-inch Turbo Fire V-8. the 396-cubic-inch Turbo-Jet V-8 rated at 325 horsepower. The really BIG news in 1966 was the 427cubic inch V-8 which became widely and affectionately known as "The Rat Motor" The small block or 283/327 was then and is still called "The Mouse Motor. " This was the largest cubic inch engine Chevrolet had ever offered as an option with the 348/409 "W" motor being the previous largest displacement V-8 for Chevrolet. Two new 427-cubic-inch Turbo Jet V8'S of 390 horsepower with 10. 5 to 1 compression ratio and hydraulic lifters or the high performance version rated at 425 horsepower with 11 to 1 compression ratio. hi-lift camchaft and solid lifters. The highest horsepower engine available in either the Corvette or Impala SS when ordered with factory air-conditioning was the 427 CID V-8 rated at 390HP with a 10. 5-1 compression ratio and referred to as the L36. Engine: 426. 7-cu-in/6993cc OHV V-8 1x4-bbl Rochester carburetor Power and torque (SAE gross): 390 hp @ 5200 rpm. 460 lb-ft @ 3600 rpm Drive train: 4-speed manual. RWD Brakes front: drum; rear: drum Suspension front: control arms. coil springs; rear: live axle. coil springs Dimensions: L: 213. 2 in. W: 79. 6 in. H: 54. 3 Weight: 3800 lb Performance: 0-60 mph: 6. 9 sec; quarter mile: 15. 3 sec @ 88 mph. 60-0 mph: 158 ft. (times can vary based on driver's skill. tires. traction and rear end ratio) A four-speed manual transmission was offered with all V8 engines. while the two-speed Powerglide was the only automatic transmission offered with the six-cylinder engine and 283 and 327-cubic-inch Turbo Fire V8s. and the three-speed Turbo Hydramatic was limited to the 396 and 390-horsepower version of the 427 V-8. The Impala was the #2-selling convertible in the U. S. in 1966. with 38. 00 sold. I know the paint and body look incredible in these photos. but in person. it is even more impressive. The paint and body work that was done on this "Heavy Chevy" were top notch. This is one of the best looking bodies I have ever seen on a real 1966 Super Sport. it is super straight! The chrome. trim and pot metal are EXCELLENT! We detected a slight ding in one of the pieces of trim that are on the underside of each fender well. rather than try and have it straightened. we opted to buy the mandatory set of 4 so we could replace the one that was less than perfect. We looked but couldn't find any pitting in the trim. pot metal or chrome. All the floor pans are rock solid. we removed the trunk mat so you can see how nicely the trunk floor pan was finished. The frame on this car is incredible! It is built like a "battleship" The special Emroidered Chevy floor mats are brand new. we installed them just for the photos and of course will come with the car. The interior is gorgeous. No rips or tears in any of the seats and the carpets are excellent (we could certainly say perfect but we are reluctant to use this word). This car has the optional gauges package and factory tachometer and all are in excellent working order. The fuel gauge also works. The dash and gauges all light up as they should and all turn signals. back-up lights. brake lights. parking lights and headlights work correctly. The glove box light was not working but we had it rewired and now works correctly. The horn and wipers also work and the Factory Air-conditioning was recently completely serviced and blows ice cold! The brakes work great (no pulling to the left or right when applied) and we just had the front end professionally aligned. I know the gorgeous chrome valve covers are not factory. so if you prefer to have the plain Chevrolet Orange valve covers. we will be happy to swap the chrome covers for the plain Chevrolet orange ones. So how does this car run? In one word FABULOUS! This 427 cranks up the first time. every time. We are only using Premium Fuel and I would suggest the new owner does the same. The compression is 10:5 to 1 while the 427/425HP solid lifter version is rated at 11:0 to 1 and with that engine you are wise to add an octane booster or additive to your tank every time you fill up. This car had a couple of minor exhaust leaks from the exhaust manifolds so we replaced both gaskets and eliminated any exhaust leak. Personally I find them annoying and if left unchecked. sometimes the exhaust fumes can find their way into the car. Also. we made sure the radiator system was working correctly and filled with the correct anti-freeze. The incredible smooth ride is provided by a Matched set of four absolutely like BRAND NEW set of FIRESTONE FR 380s. SIZE is P215 75 R 14. If on a smooth level highway and the car is pointed straight ahead. you can take you hands off the steering wheel and the car tracks perfectly straight. One of the photos shows the car on a lift where we had the front end wheel alignment professionally done. The undercarriage is clean. painted where it should be and with no signs of any rust issues. We checked for any fuel leaks or could not find any. We drove the car to warm everything up to operating temperature and then parked the car inside the garage with newspaper underneath the car. After two days we checked for any oil. gas. water. transmission. oil pan and rear end leaks and none were detected. This is unusual as most cars that are 20/30/40/50 years old or older do have some type of slight leakage after running them. not to say that this car won't develop "the drips" in the future but at this time you could park it in your living room. The clutch is nice and tight and catches slightly more than 1" off the floor which is correct. There are no annoying throw out bearing noises or grinding of gears when shifting this "bad boy" and I found all synchros to be in excellent working order and this car shifts silky smooth both up and down through all the gears. Finally. with regards to the operation of the transmission. it does NOT "Pop Out" of any gear by itself. If you have a 4/speed from this era that does that. you most likely have a problem with the synchronizing drum. sychros. clutch or even worn gears in your transmission. I think the Muncie 4/speed in this car is the M21 rather than the M22 "Rock Crusher" because the transmission is reasonably quiet while the M-22 "Rock Crushers" were notoriously noisy. I has one in a 1966 Corvette I owned and it was so loud it almost sounded like the wining noise of a blower (supercharger) The stamping number on the passenger side of the transmission tail fin is 3857584 GM which is correct for a 4/speed Muncie transmission built for all passenger cars. except Chevelle. I found all this information on the Muncie web site Here is the casting number on the housing of the Muncie transmission in this car and what it means: Casting # 3885010= Years: 1965 - 1967. Ratios: M20 2. 52 1st . M21 2. 20 1st. M22 2. 20 1st US Patent # 3088330 1” Bore - Muncie 4-Speed Manual Transmission Matching Numbers 427? I could not clearly make out the numbers on the front of the block (passenger side) so because we could not read the numbers we are not stating that this car has it's original block. The truth is we just don't know. Most likely it is a replacement block. In fact. I really doubt if more than a handful of original 427/390hp or 427/425hp blocks are still running and in service from 1966. I have no knowledge of ANY 1966 Impala SS Sport Coupes offered for sale claiming with written documentation to have it's original 427/425hp engine. When equipped with this engine. these cars were driven hard and mostly 1/4 mile at a time! Here is some extremely important and relevant information that I found while searching recent auction results and cars advertised for sale on the Internet. At the Mecum Muscle car auction this past October 9th. 10th and 11th (2014) in Chicago. Illinois. The following car (Lot F168) Sold for $60. 00: A 1966 Chevrolet Impala SS 2dr. Sport Coupe. Marina Blue with Blue Bucket seat interior. It was described as mostly original paint and equipped with a 427/425hp V-8. 4/speed transmission. optional gauge & tach package. dual mirrors. tinted glass and AM/FM radio. It did NOT have power steering or power brakes and of course could not have factory air conditioning as it was NOT available with the 425HP solid lifter motor. It was NOT described as a matching numbers car. it sold for $60. 00! I also found this car advertised on a web site for vintage cars (It was offered for $84. 95 and was marked as SOLD)! It was described as a ‘66 Impala SS 2 door sport hardtop in Silver blue with a dark blue hardtop and blue interior. NOT advertised as a "matching numbers" car! Described as a 427/425hp L-72. 4 speed M-21. 3:73 posi-traction. 7000 rpm tach. transistorized ignition (No power steering or power brakes and of course no AC as it wasn't available on a 427/425hp BUT HERE IS THE BEST NEWS! THIS incredible restored Regal Red 1966 Impala SS (the one in this auction) can be bought for a LOT less money and because of the way this car is equipped. you will have a lot more enjoyment in driving the car. and I don't think you'll need or miss the additional 35hp that comes with the 427/425HP V-8 and you will really love and appreciate the Power Steering. Power Brakes and Cold Factory Air Conditioning. Only a VERY. VERY small percentage of 1966 Impalas Super Sports were produced with the 427/390hp engine with the 4/speed transmission and factory air-conditioning. I have been told that fewer than 25 such cars are known to exist today. FIRESTONE MATCHED SET OF FOUR FR 380s P215 75 R 14 in AS NEW CONDITION. The paint has a gorgeous deep shine that looks like you could put your hand inside the paint & and because the body is so excellent it makes the paint look spectacular. which it is! The paint on this car is far superior than what existed back in 1966. It appears to be a two-stage DuPont with several coats of clear. The glass is excellent with no visible chips or cracks. I don't think this car has spent a single night outdoors. so one should not considered buying a car like this unless you have a garage to keep it safe and dry. We were told that this car was professionally restored by the gentleman who owned this car in 2005 with no expense spared. and we were fortunate to find his photo in the trunk and are delighted to show him in our auction photos. We attempted to contact him but sadly our efforts came to a dead end when we discovered that his home had been sold in 2012. The telephone number we had is no longer a working number. I have seen cars restored that looked great for 2 or 3 years. but after the passage of time. various issues began to show up. not the case with this breathtaking Impala SS Sport Coupe. All the floor pans and trunk pan are solid & in excellent condition! The body looks fantastic! We believe that when this car was restored. the owner was able to find a tremendous amount of New Original Stock sometimes referred to as NOS. When you sit behind the wheel of this 427 Impala Super Sport. it gave me the feeling of being back in the year 1966. it is difficult for me to comprehend that in one more year this car will be 50 YEARS OLD! There is no such thing as a perfectly restored car that is 49 years old but I think this car will delight any car lover and car collector. It turns heads and causes a sensation where ever you drive it! I would challenge anyone to find a nicer. straighter. better equipped or better running 1966 427 Super Sport than this car. for this amount of money. you won't be disappointed in the way this car looks and drives! Any car lover. guy or gal. would be proud to own this great looking and running Impala SS. I drove it with very light pressure on the pedal as it doesn't take much of a nudge on the gas pedal to light up the tires. It is one of the absolute nicest 66 Impala Super Sport I have seen since new in 1966. Shipping: If you need help shipping this car in the U. S. or anywhere else in this world.
