1958 marked several important changes for General Motors for it's 50th year of production and the Impala was born as the top-of-the-line Bel Air. This first-year Impala featured unique body styling - for one year only - and was the launch platform for what became the ubiquitous quad-headlight design cue that still carries on today. There wereoptions for a coupe or convertible, and several powerful engine combinations to choose from - of which, the 348ci "W" with three, two barrel carburetors was the most powerful.
The interior was neatlyappointed with a new horizontal patterning on the seats, a clock set in the dash and, of course, the tissue dispenser underneath. Beyond the aesthetics, a new "X" frame chassis was claimed to bolster torsional rigidity and allow lower placement of the body. Power brakes, power steering and a new coil-spring suspension allowed the driver to feel more assured, and tamed the rough edges of its lesser predecessor.
The car shown here is a tastefully restored example of this timeless classic. Just out of a 15+ year ownership among a 30-car collection, it was purchased from the previous owners - a husband and wife met at a car show - and driven sparingly, with very low miles since restoration (6,017).All cosmetic data listed for this car matches its current configuration as originality was clearly a top priority by the restorer - examples include the original radio, white-wall tires, Rio Red paint and White Top. Even the tissue dispenser remains intact! The classic 3-carb "Wedge" 348 small block was joined to the Powerglide transmission for increased durability and this car is being serviced by Classic Investments - soon to be driving and turning heads once again.
