The Corvette team of engineers approached Lotus with the idea of developing the world's fastest production sports car, ased on the C4 generation platform. With some help from GM, otus designed a new engine to fit in place of the L98 V8. The result was the GM named LT-5, n all aluminum block with 4 overhead cams and 32 valves producing 375 hp. Lotus also helped develop upgraded braking and steering systems to keep up with the performance the LT-5 produced. It was the intent of GM, o make the ZR-1 not just a muscle car, ut a world class road racing performer. Due to the complexity in assembling the advanced engine, M contracted Mercury Marine to build the motors and ship them to Bowling Green, Y where the cars were built. The ZR-1 went on sale in 1990 and only as a coupe. However, it was different from the standard model by incorporating a wider tail section, 1" inch wide rear wheels and squared taillights. The ZR-1 was priced, or its time, t an astonishingly high $65,000, rankly twice the amount of the base Corvette. Although the ZR-1 was extremely quick, 0-60 in 4.4 seconds and a top speed of 180+mph, he performance value was matched by its robustness. On March 1, f 1990, he ZR-1 set seven international speed records including the world record for endurance, overing 4,221 miles at an average speed of 175.885 mph.
