1994 BMW 840 CI

One of 712 840ci coupes made in 1994 Recently serviced 4.0L V-8 engine (M60B40) with 10.0:1 compression Four-speed automatic transmission Bright Red exterior (code 314) with black Nappa Leather interior (code 525) Air-conditioning, cruise control, body-colored sunroof, power steering, power four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock, power door locks, power windows, power mirrors, power and heated front seats and tinted windows Dual front airbags and All-Season Traction Control AM/FM Stereo with cassette and CD players One of the first cars to use drive-by-wire throttle and one of first BMWs to use a multi-link rear axle

Timeless styling. German exclusivity. V-8 Power. These are all features of BMW’s 840, a seldom seen grand touring coupe aimed at the executive end of the market. This particular example was built in December 1993 at BMW’s Dingolfing, Germany plant.

Dressed in Bright Red (code 314) the car’s paint and trim are in overall excellent order, with just a few minor blemishes visible upon close inspection particularly on the car’s nose. Its windows, including the rear window with its rear defroster, are clear and intact but there is a minor tinting issue at the left front window corner. The car’s lights are haze-free and unbroken. The bodywork is solid and straight, the car’s bumpers fit tightly to the body and the engine bay is extremely tidy. This 8-series rides on low profile Accelera PHI2 radials surrounding 19-inch aluminum honeycomb wheels. The tires and wheels are in overall satisfactory condition.

The 840ci used a 4.0L M60B40 engine with 10.0:1 compression and breathing through dual exhausts. Backing up this engine is a four-speed automatic transmission. Driver convenience features are extensive – air-conditioning, cruise control, body-colored sunroof, power steering, tilt steering column, power four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock, power door locks, power windows, power sideview mirrors, power and heated front seats and tinted windows. Car also has dual front airbags and All-Season Traction Control.

Inside, the car’s black Nappa Leather interior (code 525), is in overall excellent order. The front buckets and rear seat look fantastic, as does the matching black carpet. The contrasting gray headliner is in similar fine shape. The three-spoke MPower steering wheel faces the driver and looks great. The inner door panels and instrument panel are in very good order, as is the center console and shift lever. Completing the interior is a factory AM/FM stereo with cassette and CD players.

Development of the 8 Series began in July 1981, with the final design phase and production development starting in 1986. The 8 Series debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in early September 1989. The 8 Series was designed to move beyond the market of the original 6 Series. The 8 Series had substantially improved performance, as well as a far higher purchase price.

BMW used computer-aided design tools, still unusual at the time, to design the car’s all-new body. Combined with wind tunnel testing, the resulting car had a drag coefficient of 0.29, a major improvement from the previous BMW M6/635CSi’s 0.39.

It was one of the first vehicles to be fitted with an electronic drive-by-wire throttle. The 8 Series was one of BMW’s first cars, together with the Z1, to use a multi-link rear axle.

Competition to this BMW in 1994 included Acura’s NSX, Aston Martin’s Virage, Chevrolet’s Corvette, Dodge’s Stealth R/T, Ford’s Thunderbird SC, Honda’s Prelude, Lexus’ SC300, Mazda’s RX-7, Mercedes-Benz’s SL600, Mitsubishi’s 3000 GT and Nissan’s 300ZX Twin Turbo.
