Car description

1987 VW Vanagon Westfalia Camper

Round headlights in a 1987? Yes. When I asked this question to the lady I bought the van from, she replied, “I don't know why HE did that." :-) Either do I, but I like the look, and the headlights are nice and bright.

I am a retired man living in Galveston Texas. I bought this van (from Virginia) 5 years ago with 75K miles on the odometer. It is my every day vehicle. I travel in the summers (too hot here) to visit my kids, friends, and the National Parks. Each year I drive about 8,000 miles in the summers, and 2-3K miles around town here in Galveston. I have recently “moved up” to a 1997 Airstream B190 van camper so I'm selling the VW.

Last year I did a complete reseal of the motor with all new gaskets and seals, piston rings, rebuilt conrods, bolts and, bearings. All new engine bay cooling system hoses, coolant tanks, thermostat, thermostat housing, water pump, plugs, cap, rotor, plug wires, rebuilt injectors, air filter, fuel filter, oil pressure gauge, new muffler, straps, catalytic converter, O2 sensor, motor mounts, and more.

I have driven the VW 500 miles since the rebuild, including a 200 mile roundtrip interstate run (65-70 mph) on a very hot day and everything works fine. Just changed the oil and filter. The van starts, idles, runs and drives very well. It gets 17-20 MPG on the highway, no leaks, no unusual noises, good oil pressure. I would trust it without reservation for a 10,000 mile summer road trip. The van is ready to travel anywhere.

The van has the factory A/C system but is currently not operational. When I first got the van I spent over $1000 to get the A/C working (new compressor, refrigerant conversion, etc.) but it never cooled much at all and finally I just took the compressor off and drive with the windows open. The compressor and mounting hardware is in a box with the van. All controls, hoses, etc are still installed.

All the camping equipment works except I've never been able to get the propane lit for the fridge, but it works OK on AC & DC. I disconnected the outside "city water" connector. In my case, a crack in this connector was the cause of the rust on the driver's side panel. The water storage tank and pump has been recently sterilized and is fully functional.

There is some body rust as shown in the pictures. Mainly behind the rear wheels and the driver side body panel, below the utility connections. The paint is original so it's pretty obvious where the rust is.

The sale includes the canopy, owners manuals, spare keys, Bentley Factory Manual, original jack and lug wrench, both tables, all original screens and curtains, original wheel covers (awaiting restoration), nice radio/CD with remote, new deep cycle coach battery, fresh oil & filter, new front brake pads. fire extinguisher, ice trays (!) and more.

Please remember this is a 30 year old VW camper, it has plenty of scrapes and bumps. Also note that I am not OCD and, although tidy by my standards, the van will have some beach sand and dog hairs here and there.

Please ask any questions BEFORE you bid. Much better for you, me and other interested parties. This vehicle is sold "AS IS". Clear title in my name and in my possession.

Note this is a 10 day, NO RESERVE auction. High bid at the end wins.

Fly into Houston (Hobby Airport) and drive the van home.

Thanks for your interest.
