Car description

Basics- For sale is a 1972 VW Bug (standard).- It was fully restored in 2002 and driven daily for 12 years.- The bug currently has 103368 miles on it since the restoration.- In May of 2006, the engine was upgraded to a converted Type IV 2056cc. It has approximately 73,000 miles on it.- In August of 2011, the transaxle was upgraded to a Stage A transaxle built by Raby's Aircooled Technology. It has slightly taller gearing to accommodate the higher torque provided by the Type IV. It has approximately 15,000 miles on it.- It has been in an enclosed garage and covered for the last three years. It has been periodically run during that time.
MaintenanceRegular maintenance was performed (engine and transmission oil changes, brakes, wheel bearing repacking, etc.) per the recommended schedules. I also changed shift bushings, tie rod ends, and other wearing parts as required. This has been tracked and for the most part recorded. This record will be included in the sale.
RestorationDuring the full body off restoration, the floor pans, the bottom half of the A pillars, the rear clip, the gas tank, and two fenders were replaced. The pans were coated and are still in great shape with no rust at all. The seats, headliner, and carpets were reupholstered/replaced as well in 2002. The entire car was sanded, primed, and painted in 2002 as well. The full restoration also covered replacing the master cylinder and all rubber and metal brake lines, upgrading to H4 headlights with the lights wired directly to the battery using a relay, upgrading to front disk brakes, adding custom oil pressure, engine temp, and tachometer gauges (with space for one more), adding a modern alpine head unit and four speakers, adding rear seatbelts, upgrading to a solid state voltage regulator, new seals and rubber on everything, upgrading to EMPI 8 spoke style wheels, and wider tires (sized to ensure speedometer reads correctly).
Type IV ConversionWhen the engine was upgraded to the Type IV, the fuel pump was upgraded to an electric fuel pump. The Type IV engine itself has a webcam #86 grind cam, dual Dellorto 40 carburetors, standard mechanical/vacuum advance distributor, and a Raby's Aircooled Technology econoheader exhaust. It was fully rebuilt with all new seals/sealant, bearings, lifters, and cylinders and piston heads. The Type IV conversion was completed using the Type IV Upright Conversion Manual book by Joe Cali. It doesn't run hot at all even when driving all day.
Transaxle UpgradeThe transaxle was upgraded to a new Raby's Aircooled Technology Stage A Type I transaxle built for a 2056cc Type IV engine. It has true overdrive in fourth gear. If I can find it, the paperwork for this will be included in the sale.
Current StateOverall it is in great shape. The seats are starting to show some wear but still in good shape. Both front seats have been kept under seat covers while being driven. There is some rust starting on the hood in a couple locations due to paint defects, on the front clip, at the bottom of the rear panel just behind the B pillars, and on the rear panels just behind the right vent (common location). None of these areas impact the safety or driveability of the vehicle. The bug has 103368 miles on in since the restoration. Due to only having 5 digits on the speedometer, it has turned over and only shows 3368 miles. When it was last driven, the brakes worked well, all lights and signals worked, it ran smoothly, and was very quick. I didn't have any issues keeping up with any modern car. The clutch was a little sticky so the disk may need to be replaced. The battery and fuel pump may need replacing due to age. Since it was parked, the bug has been in an enclosed garage, covered, and on a battery tender.
ExtrasThe sale of the bug includes a home made roof rack that can carry two bicycles or surfboards. I will also be including all of the paperwork that I can find related to anything installed in the bug. I will also be including any spare parts (009 distributor with electric points, extra pushrod tube seals, etc.) that I can find.
