Car description

1978 Volkswagen Type II Bus Westfalia Campmobile Camper Van - Champagne Edition II
This is a very nice example of one of the only two-tone VW campers ever produced, built in 2/78 this bus has been lightly restored over the past 6 months but kept as original as possible. Driving this around you get people taking pictures of it all the time as well as stories of amazing trips they took in their '76 etc. Westy! This bus runs and drives very well and will cruise on the highway at 65 all day.
The main restoration work needed was repainting after almost 40 years of dings and scratches and sun, there is no serious rust/rot anywhere on the vehicle. The worst bits I can find is in the battery trays which is a common problem spot. Note the 2nd side mirror is missing in the pics but will be re-installed as soon as the proper plastic washer arrives.
Features:- Original 2.0 liter fuel injected engine with approx. 90k miles- RARE Automatic transmission that shifts perfectly- Original Westfalia camper interior- Beautiful repainted exterior- Excellent condition pop-top canvas- Original Manuals and paperwork from 1978- 10 years of service records
Time capsule original Westfalia Campmobile full camper interior includes:- Working sink- Working 2 burner stove- Working fridge (including original tiny ice trays!)- Original swivel table- All original carpets in excellent condition - have been covered by protective carpet for many, many years - (I even forgot to take it out for many of the pics!)- Original rock and roll bed cushions and upper bed fabric has no tears / damage- Recovered front seats to match original using GoWesty matching covers ($500 + installation)- Original fire extinguisher- All original Westfalia cabinets / furniture in very good condition, a little bit of laminate peeling here and there, but overall very nice- Upgraded Clarion CD/Aux/USB stereo system, Polk speakers all around, 6"x9" in front doors and 6" rounds in rear pointing down from top cabinet- Original working 120v -> 12v converter, charges leisure battery and runs the fridge- All side/rear curtains are in place and in very good condition- Rear bug screen curtain- Front windscreen curtain
Recent work done ($6,000+ Spent on restoration):- Complete windows out repaint in original Champagne edition colors- All new chrome trimmed window seals (except louvers, they are in good original condition)- All 5 wheels completely stripped and repainted pastel white, original hubcaps cleaned- New Hella dome light and bulb- New headliner material from GoWesty above the cab- New faucet switch- New engine fan cage- New engine foam seal- New GoWesty matching plaid front seat covers- New black front kickpanels (from Just Kampers, approved by Ratwell himself)- New sliding door handle- New heater blower hose- New louver window knobs (forgot to install before pics! will do asap)- Oil change- Full tune up, cap / rotor, plugs, wires, air filter, some vacuum hoses- New side marker lenses and backing plates all around- New city water connection (GoWesty)- New engine lid hatch seal- New sliding door rail cover seals
Spare parts included with the vehicle:- 3 sets of ceramic fuses- Mahle Oil filter for your next oil change- Continental alternator belt- Mann Air Filter- Sylvania head lamp- Touch up paint (Agate brown, Pastel white)- Original front VW badge (spare tire carrier has been on the front since forever)
It has a rare brown dash/interior, Ratwell has a listing of the brown parts on this interesting machine: http://www.ratwell.com/technical/ChampagneParts.html
Now this is a very nice original bus that drives very well and turns heads wherever it goes, but it is almost 40 years old! So there will always be things to fix on it. To be 100% transparent I had it independently evaluated and here is what I know is outstanding at this point:- Rear bumper has been dented in and fixed, looks a bit tatty, would need replacing or proper straightening/re-chroming- Right outer CV joint boot is torn- Left inner CV joint boot is torn- EGR canister pipe on left side leaks needs a little welding- Tires have some cracking due to age - but plenty of tread left- Fuel sender is intermittent, gauge only works part of the time- Odometer gear is broken and stuck at 70k, I know previous owner for last 10 years, so we have estimated the total mileage, (it was largely idle for a lot of the time)- Drivers door panel needs repair, the door card is cracked and won't hold the vent cover in (I will try to get a pic of this)- Needs a new leisure battery, this is only used by the fridge when on the road between campsites, has gone flat over the years
Clean title in hand, will get SMOG check completed Asap - passed last fall with flying colors.
