1977 Toyota Celica GT Description

1977 Toyota Celica GT

Final year for first-generation model 2L SOHC inline four-cylinder engine with aluminum alloy heads (20R) Five-speed manual transmission (W50) Red exterior (code 336) and black interior (code KD23)

Are you game for a project vehicle? Does the idea of restoring a Japanese classic appeal to you? Then come by MotoeXotica Classic Cars, where we have a 1977 Toyota Celica GT waiting for you to re-make any way you want.

Built in March 1977, this car is finished in red (code 336). The car's paint and trim are in fair condition with visible paint fade and blemishes visible at various places around the body. The driver's side 'Celica' nameplate is missing. The windows are in good overall shape. There is a set of louvers covering the rear window. The tires and wheels are in good overall condition. The car rides on General radials, size 185/70R14 at all four corners, surrounding vented alloy wheels with beauty rings.

The car's bodywork is in good base condition, however, the driver's side front marker light is broken. The trunk needs a thorough cleaning. The engine bay is somewhat tidy. The car's bumpers fit decently to the body and the battery in in very good order.

Under the forward-hinged hood is Toyota's 20R 2.2L SOHC four-cylinder engine with aluminum alloy heads and two-barrel carburetor. Backing that motor is a five-speed manual transmission (W50). Driver convenience features include power brakes, discs in front and drums in back.

Inside, the car's seats are in poor condition, with the carpet only in fair shape. The headliner is loose. The black instrument panel is in good overall condition and has woodgrain appliqués. The factory four-spoke steering wheel looks okay but the driver's sideview mirror remote is inoperable. The inner door panels are only fair, the mirror glass is in good order, the center console is fair and the shifter is in good order. Completing the interior is an AM/FM stereo with cassette deck and equalizer. The car's clock still works.

Displayed at the October 1970 Tokyo Motor Show and marketed from December of the same year, the Celica was a two-door hardtop coupe that emphasized styling and driving enjoyment, based on a platform shared with the Toyota Carina sedan, which is one size above the Toyota Corolla. This car was aimed at the North American market, and was Toyota's response to the 1964 Ford Mustang (Pony car), which also was a standard sedan (Ford Falcon) with stylized 2+2 bodywork. Over the generations, the Celica evolved into a "sports car.”

In October 1975, the entire Celica lineup was given a facelift, with a revised front bumper and grille arrangement. The new model was coded RA24 for the American spec with 20R engine. The RA series also had an elongated nose to accommodate the larger engine. The door vents, fuel filler cap, and interior were also different between the TA and RA series. The top-line GT included a five-speed manual transmission, rocker panel GT stripes, and styled steel wheels with chrome trim rings.

Competition to this Toyota in 1977 included Buick's Skyhawk, Chevrolet's Vega and Monza, Ford's Mustang II, Dodge's Colt and Challenger, Oldsmobile's Starfire, Plymouth's Sapporo and Pontiac's Sunbird.

This car is currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Current mileage on the odometer shows 69,371 miles. It is sold as is, where is, on a clean and clear, mileage exempt title. GET OUT AND DRIVE!!!
