Porsche experts agree: the 1984-'89 Carrera is the best 911 ever built. Why? It's simple. really. It's a far cry from the hyper-complex. electronically regulated. heavyweight 4-seater offered up by Zuffenhausen today. No. this Carrera is the last user-friendly Porsche that can be worked on with hand tools instead of plug-and-play computers. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Clean examples of the Carrera have already made the smooth transition from supercar to highly sought-after collectible and are coveted by knowledgeable Porsche aficionados worldwide. Find a first-year Carrera. ideally a California car that never had any rust or rust repairs. is nicely documented. loaded with options. and beautifully preserved. and you have a winner! VIN *WP0AB9013ES122258*. was manufactured during September of 1984 and is one of the last cars made for the model year. Factory options include: M220 locking differential. M395 Fuchs 7&8x15" wheels. M409 Sport Seats left and right. and M424 Automatic heating Control. A California resident from new. it was sold on December 13. 1984 by the Rector Motor Car Company in Burlingame. Calif. . for $40. 28. 20 "cash" to a gentleman from San Rafael who pampered the car for 20 years. The 911's second owner resided further South. in posh Laguna Beach. After his passing in 2009. the car was stored until we were fortunate to purchase it from the estate. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) To this day the Porsche wears its vintage California "sunset" license plates. front and back. as well as most of its factory original paint and interior. and there's no indication that the car ever sustained any rust. rust repair. or accident damage in its lifetime. The original Porsche books and manuals accompany the car. and the service booklet carries a multitude of service stamps. substantiating maintenance history and mileage (a clean history report also accompanies the car). We brought the car to Porsche specialist RS Enterprises in Ventura and had Jason -- arguably the best Porsche mechanic in Southern California -- give it a complete checkover. When finished. he gave it a clean bill of health. and it's now one of the best running Carreras we've ever had. strong as an ox. ready for its new owner's enjoyment. The luggage area of a vintage. air-cooled Porsche always yields valuable clues to its overall condition. as neglect tends to manifest itself here first. Presence of original tool roll. air compressor to inflate the tires. factory-supplied OWAFIX gloves and merlot vinyl pouch containing the manuals is a very encouraging sign. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Removing the trunk carpet allowed us to examine every nook and cranny. Everything appears factory fresh. Unused VREDESTEIN Spacemaster inflatable spare and factory tire jack are present. too. And. yes. the trunk light works and the hood shocks actually keep the hood in position - no broom stick needed here! Click on any of the above images for a full-size view Yes. we checked: there is no corrosion underneath the battery. Nose section remains pristine. Note factory paint label (color: "schwarz") on right inner fender. The pristinely preserved undercarriage shows no hint of rust or accident damage. just factory finishes and German steel. The factory's enhanced corrosion-protection includes liberal zinc-plating. The brown stuff you see is the remainder of the Cosmoline wax the factory liberally sprayed on the suspension parts. Even outside of California. this Carrera could conceivably last forever! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The car still wears most of its factory original paint which. after 30 years. displays a beautiful state of preservation. The left rear quarter panel registers slightly thicker paint. indicating a possible blend-in. and there are the usual rock chips in the vicinity of the front bumper and the lower part of the hood. but there are no dings. dents. scratches. or any other imperfections deserving of that name. Blackie rolls on a set of the "must have" 7 and 8-inch Fuchs alloys -- still showing the factory anodizing -- shod with 205/55-16 and 225-50-16 tires. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) One of the most appreciated and meaningful options on a Porsche Coupe must be the "electric sunroof. " Here. it works perfectly. and the black factory headliner and sunvisors are flawless. Note working dome lights. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Dash layout is pure. classic 911. Apart from a nice MOMO leather steering wheel. everything here is bone stock. Black leather dash surface is crack free. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) The iconic. white-on-black VDO gauges all work perfectly. even the clock! Click on any of the above images for a full-size view This Porsche carries the optional and quite expensive full leather interior. Leather-clad tan front seats present themselves in a beautifully preserved state. commensurate with the car's age and mileage. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Those spacious leather rear seats don't look like they've ever been used and fold down individually as needed to create additional luggage space. if needed. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) As clean and dry as the remainder of the car. its potent heart. the matching numbers 3. 2-liter boxer. delivering 207 horses @ 5. 00rpm. runs every bit as good as it looks. It doesn't come as much of a surprise that it never needed any work beyond regular servicing. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) There are no odd noises to report. no annoying oil leaks. and there's no exhaust smoke on initial start-up. The air conditioning has been serviced and works fine. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Friday. January 23rd was another super nice "winter" day here in Southern California. We decided to take a ride in the Porsche. heading to the New Age enclave Ojai. where we watched pottery class participants lunch on gluten-free watercress-and-tofu sandwiches. Yummy! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Piloting this 911 elicits pure joy; it starts. runs. handles. and stops excellently. On our trip from Ventura to Ojai. other motorists respectfully relinquished the fast lane as soon as they spotted the black beauty in their rearview mirrors. It's the real thing! Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Especially compared to a 911 from the early '70s. it's just amazing how refined a 3. 2 Carrera really is. Playing with the stereo. we've once managed to take off in 3rd gear and the car didn't even complain. Whereas Porsche's 2. 2 or 2. 4-liter Boxer needs to rev its heart out. the 3. 2 just goes like the proverbial bat out of hell. from slightly above idle all the way to redline. determined to eat up the road. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Returning home. we once again felt confident in naming the 3. 2 Carrera the most perfectly balanced classic Porsche 911 money can buy. Unlike some of its earlier siblings. the 3. 2 can easily be enjoyed on a daily basis. if so desired. Click on the above image for an XXL-sized view (a separate browser window will open) Be it as a prestigious everyday sports car or a cherished collectible. this superb Carrera provides unequalled driving enjoyment. Keep it garaged. tuned and detailed. and it will never lose its value. that's guaranteed! It's easy to maintain. inexpensive to insure. fully accepted by the PCA crowd. and looks as good as a late-model Ferrari. at a fraction of the cost.
