Unfortunately. VW pulled out and Porsche took over the project. Ferry Porsche intended the 914 to attract younger drivers. The 914-6 models were very limited and exclusive. Only 3. 00 cars were built worldwide and mere 260 in 1971 were imported to the U. S. This 914-6 was built in March of 1971 and sold by Eckhardt Porsche of Oklahoma City to Jerry Roberts of Tulsa on October 25th. 1971. The primary owner of the car was Howard DeHaven who was the founder of Rennsport Werkstatt. Howard was a PCA member and active enthusiast on the Porsche scene for decades. He owned a very rare factory 914-6 GT that he occasionally used for early morning jaunts and a few shows. Jerry was Howard’s insurance agent and also serviced the car at Rennsport. Howard ended up owning the car off and on over a 30-year period. He would service it for his clients and then end up buying it or trading it. Then. he would get it back to service. He enjoyed using it as weekend car so he wouldn’t get in trouble driving his GT on the street. In 1993 and with 117. 00 miles. Howard began a mechanical restoration of the car in his spare time. He did most of the work himself with some help from his Rennsport mechanics. His goal was to make the car a fun driving weekend car. During that time. it was carefully stored in a climate-controlled garage and never driven. Shortly after this. the current owner acquired the car from Howard. This owner is a 35+-year Porsche enthusiast and collector. He had been bugging Howard for years to sell him the car. The current owner appreciated that Howard left the cosmetics mostly original. So. in 2009. the cosmetic restoration began. The goal was to preserve as much of the original parts possible. The interior is mostly original. A few updates were made for practical use and the original parts were carefully saved. Minor interior upgrades include: Later design outside mirrorLarger rear view mirrorLater style parking brake handleRadio removed (JVC from the 70’s) Furthermore. Howard had cut louvers into the lower rear valance to help with engine cooling and installed under-floor air deflectors from a later 914. The current owner carefully removed the louvers from the rear valance and replaced them with the same factory mesh found on the engine cover. The final stage was the paint. Huber Restorations was selected for the job. They have been around for 30+ years and are known for their top quality work. They even have a class win at Pebble Beach. The car was carefully disassembled. All the glass and trim were removed and the original interior was removed and stored-off site for protection. The battery tray was disassembled for repainting and modified to allow to be removed with nuts and bolts to help keep it clean and dry. The holes for the side markers and radio antenna were repaired. The car was repainted its original color using single stage Glasurit paint. The underside was dry and factory original so it was just cleaned and left alone. There is still some of the original Cosmoline remaining. After the paint cured for several months. the car was color sanded and polished. Most of the bright-anodized exterior trim was replaced with NOS (new old stock). The only pieces that couldn’t be found were the two window door channels and the long piece at the top rear edge of the roll bar. King of Trim in California refinished those original pieces. All of the rubber and plastic trim pieces were replaced with new ones. ROW (rest of world) turn signal lenses were installed and the originals saved. Finally. new vinyl was installed on the roll bar. The following original factory parts were cleaned and reinstalled after paint: Chrome bumpersBumper trimExterior light assembliesHornsTarga topInterior partsGlassDoor locksTrunk latchesHorn grilles A new Porsche brand “Sigla” windscreen was installed. but the original was preserved and available. This 914-6 is a wonderful blend of original and restored. It exterior looks fantastic and fresh. The interior is clean and in amazing condition considering it is mostly original. But. the best part of this Porsche is the way it drives. It feels tight and responsive. The extra punch from the engine is just right and how the car should have originally been delivered.
