Car description

West Coast Classics presents an absolutely exceptional example of this original southern California rust free coveted original California 'black license plate' 1964 Pontiac Grand Prix coupe with its original L74 389/303 bhp 4BBL V8 (18K code correctly mated to a/t & a/c) engine, reportedly with 35k original miles, with full PHS documentation and loaded with factory options including factory air conditioning ($430), front bucket seats with center console with vacuum gauge and floor shifter, lamp package, EZ-Eye windshield, power windows ($106), power brakes ($43), power steering ($108), deluxe steering wheel, dual exhaust, electric clock, rare factory 'reverb' AM radio ($89) with rear speaker and power antenna and very desirable and rare aluminum 8-Lug wheels ($122)! Please note that the car's original Hydramatic transmission has been upgraded with the GM 400 three speed automatic transmission as visible in the undercarriage pictures.
Originally sold at 'Jim White Pontiac' of Santa Monica, CA and owned by it's original Santa Monica, CA owner until we acquired the car in 2020. The car was recently repainted in it's original factory 'Starlight Black' (color code AA) paint with matching 'Black' roof with its original 'Black' vinyl bucket seats interior with the large chrome dials and factory gauges set in a real walnut inlay and the rare and highly desirable factory option of original 8 lug Pontiac rims, made by Kelsey-Hayes for Pontiac use on 1960 full size Pontiacs and some Mopars too, which were finned aluminum and very good at keeping brakes cool and more importantly are long considered the best looking stock wheels ever made! All of the chrome has been re-chromed.
Recently fully serviced at 35,259 original miles in 2/2020 after having being sitting for some time, prior to sale, with all new fuel lines after the drainage of all the old bad fuel replacement with all new fluids & filters, brake fluid flush with all hydraulic lines and hoses inspected, calipers & wheel cylinders, R&R brake master cylinder, master cylinder & cap, entire brake system flush, clean adjust brake drums, R&R rear hydraulic brake hose, transmission service, new battery, set carburetor, points & timing, replace new plugs, engine core plug kit, replace rear main seal, rotate and inspect tires. ($2,392.64). Previously at just 32,192 miles; installed a new timing chain and gears set to spec, new timing chain cover, new shifter linkage, install electrical kick down switch, new front exhaust pipes, remove old hydro trans and flywheel assembly and replace with turbo 400 trans with new flywheel and starter motor, custom fit new crossmember, remanufacture transmission with torque convertor, custom manufacture new drive shaft to fit new transmission ($4,316.24). At 31,931 miles; the car had all new fuel pump, new distributor cap, water pump, thermostat & gasket, engine mounts, radiator re-cored, new front & rear brakes, pinion seal, upper & lower arm control bushings, alignment etc ($3,938.54)
The floor boards, trunk and all the typical rust-prone areas are completely solid and rust-free and the car has no signs of any accidents with a laser straight body - obviously an always garaged and original cherished southern California owner/driver since new. The original spare wheel is in the trunk. The 389/303HP 4 bbl V8 engine is extremely strong and powerful and this particular car drives very well indeed. The upgraded 400 Turbo 3 speed automatic transmission has been installed and is considered one of the best automatic transmissions ever produced. With a three-speed automatic shift, the Turbo-Hydramatic series was developed to replace both the original Hydra-Matic models and the Buick Dynaflow. In its original incarnation as the Turbo-Hydramatic 400, it was first used in the 1964 model year in Cadillac's. The Buick version, which followed shortly thereafter, was known as the Super-Turbine 400. By 1973, THM units had replaced all of GM's other automatic transmissions including Chevrolet's Powerglide, Buick's Super Turbine 300, and Oldsmobile's Jetaway. Starting in the early 1980s, the Turbo-Hydramatic was gradually supplanted by four-speed automatics, some of which continued to use the 'Hydramatic' trade name.
The Pontiac Grand Prix was the top-of-the-line Pontiac luxury coupe and the first in a long line of 'Posh' Pontiacs that continued to the marques demise and boasted the most powerful standard engine of any Pontiac. Bucket seats were part of the standard package, as was a tachometer (with manual transmission) and vacuum gauge (with Hyra-Matic) and a center console also came as standard. The Grand Prix was a superbly styled car equally suited for the open road as it was around town.
This is a rare opportunity to own a great daily driving and never abused example of a coveted original southern California owner 'black plate' and rust free 1964 Pontiac Grand Prix coupe in very fine and mostly completely original condition, apart from one repaint in it's original factory color and the 400 turbo upgraded transmission, throughout! It has its full PHS documentation and its original owners manual with Protecto-plate which will be included with the car. Owned for over fifty six years by only very careful driving southern California owner, this is a beautiful example of one of the outstanding GM designs of the sixties, which has high repute amongst enthusiasts and collectors for both it's beautiful lines and smooth fast performance for a luxury coupe.
