Car description

1981 Turbo Trans Am Y84 Special Edition

This is an exceptional and mostly original 1981 Y84 Special Edition Turbo Trans Am (with the WS6 package) and just under 35,000 original miles. I purchased this car a few years ago with full PHS documentation along with the original build sheet.

As far as the exterior goes, the paint on the body appears to be mostly original and is overall in excellent condition. This is one of the main reasons Ibought this car. The decals andpin striping have no fading, so I think it is safe to say they have been replaced at some point. The only thing I would note as far as paint goes, is that the rear bumper and spoiler both have a couple of areas where the clear coat is lifting... notnoticeable until you are looking close, but the rest is so nice it is probably worth re-doing if you are going to show the car. The tires are new with only a few thousand miles on them, they are BF Goodrich Radial T/As in 245/60-15 size. The wheels have no curb damage and appear original. The gold paint is however coming off in a few select areas. All of the exterior lights and signals work, as they should. The turbo lights work around 50% of the time. The “Normal” light can be toggled on and off with the factory switch and works 100%. The T-tops (and their individual storage bags) are in good condition, no leaks, etc. The doors have no sagging and open and close easily, what you would expect of a low-mileage car, however the drivers side door seal should be replaced at some point due to age. There is ZERO rust anywhere on this vehicle. The trunk, doors, rocker panels and underside are clean and solid.

As this vehicle is located in California ALL of the smog equipment is present and accounted for. A brand new exhaust system with a new catalytic converter was also installed. The car passed smog control with ease and the California registration is paid in full until December of 2017.

The transmission shifts great and the rear end is the factory GM 10-bolt with the stock 3.08 Positrac rear end that was recently rebuilt. Heat and air conditioning work great. Over $2,000 was spent replacing the compressor, dryer and evaporator; it has been converted to 134a refrigerant, however there is a small leak at the front host fitting causing a leak if not used regularly.

The interior is very stock and original. The driver's seat inserts however look to have been replaced at some point, see pictures. The Delco AM/FM stereo works fine. The HVAC controls all function properly as do the windshield wipers. It looks like there was something mounted on the console at one time under the radio, the holes have been filled but not re-dyed. All of the gauges work, even the clock. This car drives and cruises beautifully and is an absolute joy to drive and the attention it receives is hilariously fun to be a part of as an owner.

Over $4,500.00 worth of work has been performed over the last few years to ensure reliability (full list of receipts available upon request) and I wouldn’t hesitate to drive this car anywhere.
