1969 Opel GT

When I was in High School, I owned an Opel GT, so did my mom and both of my sisters, we loved these cars! 25 years later I decided that I wanted another one, that was in 2007. I searched the internet and found two choices: rust buckets cars that were a nightmare and restored that were expensive. I finally found a couple in Kennewick Washington that had two Opel GT's for sale, along with some spare parts, they both needed to be restored but they were solid, no rust cars. I bought the cars and had them shipped to Las Vegas in April of 2007. When the cars arrived, I went to work restoring the 1969 and used the 1971 as a parts car. I was in the helicopter business at that time, so I enlisted the help of some of the helicopter mechanics and we went to work.

I found an ad in a magazine and decided to build a car to match the ad.

We stripped the car, painted it, sent the interior off to have it redone, replaced or repaired everything that was needed. This project lasted over a year (we were restoring some other cars at the same time)

When I bought the cars from Washington, I also purchased a 2.0 L Big Valve engine with a balanced flywheel from the same couple in Washington. The engine had a fresh rebuild and ran strong. I added a Weber carburetor.

I moved to Texas in July of 2008 and brought the Opel GT with me, along with 13 other cars that I had purchased or restored. We had no place to put the cars in Texas, so this Opel ended up in my brother-in-law's garage for a couple years and then he needed the space, so the car was put under a covered storage area, where it sat for 9 years. A few moths ago I realized that, if I can own a car for 11 years without driving it, I probably don't need to keep insuring it, so here it is! Not as easy as it sounds. When I dug it out of storage (literally) I had to replace the brakes, remove and refurbish the fuel tank, Replaced the fuel lines, install another new Weber carburetor, and then I started it up and found that the head gasket was leaking. I took it to my mechanic in New Braunfels in June. I picked the car up from the mechanic last week, washed it and took the pictures you see here. I am not going to park it for another 10 years! Someone needs to own this car that will drive it, show it off! On my way home from the mechanic I stopped at the car wash and had three different people stop by to look at the car, it's a beauty!

This year (2019) you are starting to hear a lot of good talk about the Opel GT being a great investment car. There were only 12,000 GT's brought to the US in 1969. Here are a couple of good articles:

The good, the bad and the...there is no ugly here!

Good; the car runs smooth down the road and gets great gas mileage. You can cruise the freeway at 75 all day. Parts and upgrades are very easy to come by. There is a company in Northern California called Opel GT Source, they have everything you need for these cars and they are very nice people who have a wealth of knowledge (Look them up https://www.opelgtsource.com/)

Bad; after sitting in storage for all those years the car has a couple of small paint chips and scratches, I pointed them out in the photos. I did not use touch up paint on this car because I wanted you to see the exact condition. There are three hairline cracks in the paint orclear-coaton the top of the car. You cannot see them unless someone points them out to you, but they make the paint job less than a perfect score. Rust? There is a very small amount of surface rust on the rear tailpipe chrome, you will see it in the photos. The car is solid, pans are solid, battery area is rust free and solid. The mechanic lost the original keys. He had new ones made but the door key broke when I tried to use it. Ignition key works fine. Ill try to get a new door key made this week, but no promises because I've been super busy.

This is a very nice example of an Opel GT. It would make a very nice daily driver and it would do well at local car shows. If the paint were in the same condition as it was when I parked it in 2008, I would be selling at a major auction. I have pages of receipts for repairs and parts. This is one of those cars that I will probably regret selling (I do that a lot). Whoever buys this car will be very happy with it.

If you want to ship it, I'll assist the transport company with loading, etc. Or, Fly into San Antonio or Austin (we live in between those cities) Drive it home, anywhere in the country, it's good to go!

Trade? I'm not really looking for anythin, but always willing to look. It would be tricky to take a trade on a no reserve auction, but it can be done. If you have something to trade we would need to agree on a value of your trade before the auction ends. If you are the winning bidder on the Opel, I will give you credit for your trade, based upon what we agreed to. If the Opel sells for more, you pay the difference. If the Opelsells for less, ill pay you the difference. I like older 4x4 trucks, hot rods, boats and motorcycles.
