Car description

This mini was built in 1960 – only a year after its introduction. The original Mk1 shell is in amazing condition. I can see no structural rust and subframes look like new. A previous owner put a lot of money into replacing all of the metal from the firewall forward and then began to bring the car up to Mini Cooper specifications and some.

The original 850 engine was replaced with a 1098 MG engine which has the same cylinder head as the Cooper. He sourced a differential that let him keep the “magic wand” shifter, added a four synchro gearbox and then swapped out the front drum brakes for 7” discs. These discs are not known for their stopping power but I added Green pads to improve their bite. To help keep the car planted, he also fitted adjustable suspension trumpets. and finned rear drums. Great for rallying. I believe the dynamo was replaced with a new one at the same time.

The interior looks good in black and seats are in fair condition as is the head liner and rear quarter panels. She also has the original floor mounted start button and center speedometer pod with integral interior lights. Carpets are in great condition and front seats have lap belts fitted. Doors and windows are in great condition with all new rubber seals.

In the last 6 weeks or so, I removed the engine and transmission for a full refresh. Main bearings, con rod bearings, cam bearings and piston rings were all replaced. The engine had previously been re-bored to +010 and bores were within specification so were just honed. I also installed a new clutch, release bearing, slave cylinder, push rod and master cylinder. At the top end, valve seals were replaced.

I was never a fan of the rubber CV joints so I replaced them with nylon/needle bearing units and also replaced the engine steady bushes. Finally, a new exhaust downpipe and exhaust system and a new battery completed the build. The engine runs great with over 80 lbs oil pressure cold and 50-75 lbs warm. She starts easily and runs great. Mileage of course is unknown but had a declared "true" mileage of 26000 when I bought it. The odometer was reset to 0 when I was repairing it.

Paint is not the original tartan red but is in fair to good condition but would benefit from some buffing.

I had planned to turn her into a rally car but old age and other priorities got in my way. The car will transfer with LOADS of receipts for work done by the previous owner, a British Heritage certificate, original steering wheel and a few spare bits and pieces.

I really love this car and if I cant get my reserve, I will keep her. I am happy to help with loading onto your transporter. Maybe she will even go back home……
