Car description

  • 1985 Mercedes Benz 500SEC Coupe. NO RESERVE AUCTION. This car will be sold to the highest bidder.

Euro Spec, Sunroof, Full Body Kit (I do not know if it is made by AMG or not but it does look to be original to the car and of the correct time period), BBS Wheels, AMG Speedometer, 54,505 Original Miles (miles are stated to be original on the title from the previous owner),

I am not a professional reseller or car dealer, just a guy who likes cars. I’m in the unfortunate situation of having a get rid of my “future projects” because I don’t have the space, time, or money to deal with them anymore. This hard to find 1985 500SEC has a Massachusetts title from the previous owner as I never had the car registered in California.

Overall, this is probably a good project car for someone or could be a good “parts car” for someone who already has another 500SEC. I bought the car in 2013 from a seller in Massachusetts and had the car shipped to California. The car ran a bit rough and idled at low RPM. I had a few parts replaced, had it tuned up by my local Benz shop (spending about $1000) and the car ran good. I drove it for a short time and then it started billowing white smoke from the tailpipe and I parked the car. It has sat untouched for about the past 6 years. The car is not currently running. I had intended to have it fixed/restored and just never got around to it. About a year ago, while sitting, the car started leaking gas which is probably a fuel line issue or a rust hole in the tank. So to be clear, there are a number ofmechanical issues that would need to be be addressed before this car should be started/driven.

This car is a unrestored 35 year old car so it is far from perfect. Although the pictures were just taken on Feb 28, 2020, I feel that the pics look better than the car does in person. The body looks pretty straight, trunk and hood close as they should. The passenger side door is sticking and needs to be locked in order to sit flush. I believe mechanism is just stuck from sitting and should be an easy fix to get back to working correctly. The original paint is bubbled or peeled off in multiple areas (see pictures as I tried to show those areas as best I could). There are areas of rust showing through paint on the wheel wells and what looks to be surface rust on multiple other areas of the car. The paint is worn down from the years in some spots which is pretty easily seen when up close, although the car looks good from 15-20 feet away. The rubber around the glass is cracked and dry. The glass is unbroken is looks to be in good shape. The interior leather is pretty dried out and is significantly sun bleached in spots. The wood grain also has effects related to the sun/storage and is bubbled and peeling in spots. Although the interior is clean, the condition of the leather is not great in my opinion. The headliner is intact, although two panels on either side of the rear window have come loose. These could be re-attached with some adhesive.
