Most collectors know the history of the Ford Thunderbird but a little review will help you understand why the car in this ad is so desirable. In 1953 General Motors came out with a two-seater sports car and caught the Ford Motor Company off guard. Ford quickly caught up and met the two-seater Corvette head on in 1955 with their two-passenger T-Bird. By 1956 Ford realized that there was a strong desire for a sports type car in the American market but the post war generation were raising families. Ford came up with the idea of a 4-seater Thunderbird that could capture a larger share of the marketplace. In 1958 the first 4-seater Thunderbird was a major hit. especially the convertible with the disappearing power top that went into the trunk area. The 4-seater Thunderbird continued to be refined from 1958 until its final generation in 1966. By 1966. Ford was running a 390 cu. in. engine with a 3-speed automatic transmission that really gave the car a sports car type feel. Besides that the disappearing top always put on a great show whenever you put your top up or down. Keep in mind in the 1950s and 1960s air conditioning in a convertible was not a matter of cost it was just considered a dumb idea. Who would want to have air conditioning when they are driving with the top down? Of course today everybody wants to have air conditioning whether they have a hardtop or a convertible. Bottom line is that you find very few air-conditioned convertibles in the 1950s and 1960s period. The car in this ad is about as good as it comes with the 4-seat Thunderbirds. It is the last generation and it has all of the equipment including. YES. including air conditioning. The A/C is a very big plus both in the comfort for the passengers in the car and also in the extra value it creates for the car. If you are one of those collectors that likes to have a car that is fully roadable for the spring. summer and fall months but live in a very warm area during the summer then the air conditioning becomes paramount. Nobody in Scottsdale. AZ or Texas or Oklahoma in July and August want to drive with the top down when the sun is out so the air conditioning becomes more of a necessity then a luxury if you are going to use your collector car for touring. There is a reason that the Thunderbirds have a niche market for personal luxury cars. The fourth generation was restyled in a squared-off design. The 1966 T-birds were the last year of the generation but featured a new egg-crate style grille with a dramatic new Thunderbird emblem at is center. The rear fascia was new and the brake lights were restyled to appear as one unit. The 300 horsepower with 390 cu in V8 remained the standard engine and was paired with 3-speed automatic transmission. The famous sequential turn signals flash the individual segments of the broad. horizontal tail lights in sequences from inside to outside to indicate a turn.
