Chevelle’s and Pontiac GTOs, ure, ut everyone seems to forget that the Buicks like the GS455 made more torque than any other gas engine GM ever built until the arrival of the latest supercharged Corvette ZR1. By 1972, ompression was down, ut the Buick was still a strong performer, ailing the 14-second quarter mile times at better than 100 MPH, nd did it while loaded with luxury features that were not available on its corporate cousins. This stunning Burnished Copper Poly GS Coupe is believed to be one of only 22 built with an automatic and is believed to be the only dealer installed GSX package air-conditioned car built in 1972. This car is a true GS455 car and according to the previous owner and the Sloan Museum VIN Number Documentation this is believed to be a dealer installed GSX package car. This vehicle has an Illinois rebuilt title but the car will not Carfax because as will all classic cars, t is older than 25 years old. With a prize-winning restoration and paint and bodywork that is second to none, his is not a car to be missed for any collector or enthusiast. While Chevelle’s, emi's, nd the Pontiac GTO’s get a lot of attention, hey certainly aren’t the only game in town….Not by far. Their close cousins have more curves and more cubes, ending them a lasting appeal that resonates in today’s collector market. This unbelievably clean GSX was the beneficiary of a professional, oad-ready restoration a few years ago and is a great example of why ALL GM muscle cars are so incredible! But before we get too far, et’s decode the VIN and body tag.VIN: 4G37U2Z1157174 = Buick G = GS 37 = 2-door hardtop coupe U = 455 4 BBL V/8H = Flint Michigan assembly plant 2 = 1972 yearZ = Built in Fremont, A115717 = production numberNow for the body tag:ST72 = Model year 197243437= GS 2-door coupe hardtop Z = built in Fremont, alifornia 136 = Saddle Vinyl interior 03B = built 3rd week of Feb 1972. 115717 = Production NumberBorn with classic good looks, his Buick’s current condition comes courtesy of a complete, rame off restoration that was done a few years ago. This fine Buick is fitted with the correct red lined rocker trim and detailed with red inlayed emblems. At the front of the body, our headlights surround the nice pointed grille that sits behind a body-wide front chrome bumper. Dramatic curves and lines on the hood with the help of a functional ram air create a sinister look. Make your way down the sides of the body and you’ll see how the copper hue was, aturally, opped with show-quality chrome, new glass, nd straight stainless trim and GSX decals.Speed is provided by an original 455 cubic inch V8 that creates a stout 360 horsepower. The whole engine assembly is covered in bright red paint and seated between correct, atin Black fenders. And everything, rom the car’s dual-snorkel air cleaner to its oil pan, resents with prestige and authenticity. At the top of the engine on the huge air cleaner that rests on a 4-barrel carburetor, ou will find ‘GS 455 badging. Chrome valve covers accent the red engine and black engine bay quite nicely. The GS Buicks were feared not only for their horsepower ratings, ut also the insane amount of torque they would leave the factory with.Put the car on a lift and you’ll see that the big mill is backed by an original GM Turbo-Hydromantic 400 3-speed automatic transmission, ith a gear vendors over/under drive, hich spins a traditional GM 10-bolt that has 4:11 gears packed inside it. The car’s original double A-arm front and 4-link rear suspension, hich has been completely rebuilt to factory specifications, eatures correct power steering. Spent gases flow through aluminized pipes to throaty, ual-chamber mufflers. And at the corners, 5-inch Magnum 500s twist 245/60R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/A’s. Behind the tires, ower front disc brakes, nd rear drum are responsible for slowing the muscle car quickly.Open the doors and inside this GSX and you’ll find greater Buick styling wrapped in a mixture of saddle tan vinyl, right stainless and rich wood grain appliqué. A luxurious set of bucket seats sporting fresh covers that, udging by appearance, aven’t seen much road time. That upscale aura continues onto the dashboard, hich offers rebuilt factory gauges and an after market Audio Sound “Buick” AM/FM radio. And hidden inside the glove box a nice upgraded JVC head unit that powers a 6-CD changer unit in the trunk. In front of the driver, satin-spoked steering wheel laps a subtle “BUICK” horn script. Behind the front seats is an additional bench seat capable of housing two more of your closest friends. Above the seats is a taught saddle headliner, nd below new saddle carpet finishes off the look of the interior. The GSX package was available in 1971 and 1972, hough power gradually fell, ue to emissions. The package was available in any color and with several power plants up to the 345-hp Stage I. This car has original, ldquo;born with the car” numbers matching U-CODE/A9 250hp/455ci V8. Only 124 were sold in 1971 and 44 in 1972, o a real one is a rare find indeed, nd verifiable provenance is a must and highly recommended that any interested buyer does their own research. The 1972 GS and GS 455 would be the last of Buick’s muscle car line until the Grand National ten years later. While no single year of this generation of Buick GS sold particularly well in their day, hey are now remembered as one of GM’s premier muscle cars. The market for authentic, nvestment grade Buicks is incredibly strong at this time. The Buick 455 GSX has a cult like following that swear by their monstrous horsepower and high torque numbers, nd revere them as the fastest sleeper muscle car of all time. Whether that statement is true or not is up for debate, ut what isn’t up for debate is the fact that these machines are still today some of the most malicious pieces of American Muscle ever to be around in the early 70’s. Don’t miss your chance to own this incredible piece of American muscle car history.Rare, ast and truly beautiful, his Buick GSX is for the discerning collector or enthusiast who knows the difference between, ldquo;just a nice car,” and truly a great investment-grade vehicle. The Buick’s are starting to see more movement after many years of flying under the radar. If you have been on the hunt for something different to add to your garage, his believed to be one of only 22 built with an automatic and potentially a one of only one Air-Conditioned GSX 455 cars built, s truly a hard one to beat!Highlights:Original numbers matching U-CODE/A9 250hp/455ci V8Believed to be 1 of only 14 carsComplete restorationFactory power steeringFactory AirGM Turbo Hydromantic 3-speed automatic transmissionCovered in GM Code 63 Burnished copper PolyGM 10-bolt axleLuxurious saddle vinyl interiorGear Vendor's Over/Under DriveCLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD & VIEW THE SLOAN MUSEUM VIN NUMBER DOCUMENTATION RESEARCH PDF FILE.Exterior Photos
